Freaking Out!!!

I am currently a stay at home mom. I have a wonderful 7mo old baby girl and love her to peices! I'd love to have more children in the future, but right now the timing would be VERY BAD. My husband is deploying for a year (again). Anyway, we recently had a bit of an "accident". Lets just say that the condom was in less then working condition. Now I'm in a state of panic because I'm not sure how ovulation works (or doesn't) while breastfeeding. I still haven't had a menstral cycle since the birth of my daughter. Does anyone know if there is a chance that I could get prego??? Has anyone had this experience or know anyone who actually HAS gotten prego while still breastfeeding???
Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks mommees. :)

I knew someone who got pregnant while she was breastfeeding. She didn't find out she was pregnant until she was 6 months along. She didn't know she was pregnant because she didn't realize you can get pregnant while breastfeeding, but she felt the baby moving and saw a Dr.

It is a myth that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding. I have a friend that is currently pregnant with her third and she was nursing her 7 month old when she became pregnant. Take a pregnancy test to find out, if you're still worried go to your doctor for a test.

I am not sure how recently you had an accident but if it has been within the last 2-5 days you may be able to take plan B (the morning after pill) as a safty percaution. It is ok to take with breastfeeding. You don't even need a perscription. You can just ask the pharmacist for it.

There is always a possibility, but it's small. The problem is that your ovulation and cycle are very random right now, so it could come back at any time and is not predictible, which is why there is a small possibility. I wouldn't stress too much about it, but take an early detection test in a few weeks just to put yourself at ease!

Hey D.! I have TOTALLY been in your shoes. My husband just returned from his 2nd 15 month deployment and we have 3 kids so far. I nursed all 3 and like you, didn't menstruate. YES...you can get pregnant. As I found out after my 1st child. Hence the 3 kids. ;) I recomment a blood test. For some reason when I would do a urine test it would always come out positive while I was nursing even when I wasn't pregnant. Hope that helped and that you find out soon enough!

p.s. I hope your husband has a safe and speedy deployment! I also wish you and your baby girl all the best!

You can get preggers. I did after having my first and breastfeeding he was six months old before I found out. I had to ask my doctor to check for the pregnancy (because the 6 month postpartum check up did not show this.}

I got pregnant with my daughter while I was breastfeeding my son. He was ten months old, but I had one cycle when he was four months old. You can take a pregnancy test within a few weeks of implantation. Good luck.

from my personal experience, you actually have a greater chance of becoming pregnant after you give birth while you children are still young. Everyone I have know has had an "accident" when their children were very very young.

I am not sure exaclty how ovulations works with breast feeding but I do know several people who have gotten pregnant while they were breast feeding. One of my friends conceived when her baby was only 2 months old.

i understand timing on having other kids- a very important thing to consider when planning a family! breastfeeding is definately a form of family planning, but as you seem to know, cannot be used alone. if you are only nursing, and on a regular basis, you have a 20% of becoming pregnant. even if you have not had your peroid yet, you still may become pregnant. i hope this helps! good luck!

I actually was breastfeeding my son when I became pregnant with my daughter. He was about 6-7mos and I did have periods but they were very irregular and didn't even have them evry month. It is possible but judging ovulation is difficult when breastfeeding. I say there is definately chance but try to calm down. It would be best to take a blood test since it shows more quickly or wait and do a urine test. Good luck. My two are 16mos apart!! But they are fun!:)

I've head that it's possible but not common, especially if you haven't had a period yet. I would definately get a pregnancy test just to make sure.

Yes, there is a chance that you can get pregnant while breastfeeding. Although it is less likely then if you were not. What's the saying... you can't unscramble and egg (no pun intended). If this just happened, and you really don't want to be pregnant, call you GYN and ask about the morning after pill. I think it's over the counter, but you want to make sure you can take it and still breast feed. The pharmacist should also be able to advise you. Good luck, I hope everything turns out as you hope.

hi, yes it can happen while breastfeeding. I would tell you not to freak out yet, because the chances are still lower than if you were not breastfeeding. I would have to say good luck, hope it works out the way you want it to.

There is a possibility that you can get pregnant. My sister was breastfeeding and became pregnant with my 4th nephew....an accident as well. I don't know how you feel about it but what about the morning after pill. And just remember, God only gives you what you can handle so whatever happens it will all turn out ok.

I got pregnant while still nursing my 5 mo old. It is actually very common. I hadn't had my period yet, but you ovulate before you get your period, so you never know until you start to bleed. Ovulation "fluid" is a sticky white/clear discharge, did you have that this month? I would wait a week or so and get a pregnancy teat. If you can't wait, have your Dr. perform a blood test. Good luck.

Hey D.,
sounds like "OH O"! I have heard that while breastfeeding you are not quite as fertile than if you go straight to the bottle....in fact that is another advantage to breast feeding. I'm not sure how, or if the ovulation is different though. I think it's just a natural thing youR body does!! Good luck I hope that your worries turn out to be nothing!!
p.s. tell your husband THANK YOU for serving our country :)
