Hello all... Well heres the deal. I have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabeties , For the secoend time , so I know what I am doing on that front. What I am freaking out about is the fact they are worried about my baby being small, now If you have GD one of the main concerns is a overweight baby . So now I have to have a sonogram on christmas eve( Which COMPLETELY cuts into my holiday plans ), SO if there is anything wrong I get to find out on Christmas Eve. I am a emotioanl wreak , Has anyone else had this concern . My first baby was a little on the small side so I wasn't to concerend about not being huge , but the NEED to have this sonogram and not being able to wait for it until after Christmas kind of has me worried. anyway thanks for listening .

As hard as it may be, I would try and relax. If you are getting your sonogram done at a hospital, Christmas Eve is just another work day for those employees. Hospitals can't close on holidays. I have a friend who has to go on Christmas Day to get a sonogram/stress test!!! I am sure everything will be fine. Focus your thoughts on the smile and laughter from your amazing 2&1/2 yr, it is going to be a really fun Christmas. when you are relaxed and happy that will help your growing baby!

I've been in your shoes, not the exact situatino but a heart defect and you have to wait to find out how serious, etc. It all worked out fine. I have sooo many friends that have small babies if there is anything even wrong just know that medically they can do amazing things these days. Be thankful that you have a doctor that is concerned enough and that they are looking into it as a percaution. Know that God is in control of the siutation and that rearranging a couple days of your life is totally worth finding out what is going on. That's awesome that someone is willing to do a sonogram on Christmas eve!!! Remember, they are having to cut time out of their family's schedule too so be very very thankful that you have so many medical folks concerned about you and your baby and taking time away from their family and friends to take care of you. :)

I had gestational diabetes as well and they were always concerned about my baby being small. I had regular sonograms to check on her and they even sent me to the hospital twice to check on her. I freaked every time. She was small, but nothing out of the ordinary. Today she is 10months, healthy and happy. I think doctors just try to take every precaution.
Most of my girlfriends had 1 or 2 sonograms at the most...I had about 6.

Hi C.,

Remember me, I work for the ADA? :) I would try your best to relax... if there was truly something urgent, you would be sitting in that doctor's office TODAY or they would have put you into the hospital, which would really mess with your holiday plans! Since you are probably eating SO well to control the GD, they probably just want to put you and the doc's mind at ease until your next check-up and make sure that your precious babe is getting enough nourishment. The real danger with GD is that a fetus does not make insulin... so if the mother does not control her blood sugar, high blood glucose levels can hurt the baby in utero, since the mother's insulin does not go to the baby. It can create similar complications to what advanced diabetes does in an adult. Please go to www.diabetes.org for the latest information on GD and please don't hesistate to write me again, I will help you get whatever info you need from the ADA to put your fears to rest.

I have this great feeling that all will be well Monday! Try to pray and have some peace about it all. Honestly, if there was something really wrong, they would have had you in the office the next day!

Good luck,
K.

With my last pregnancy, I had a similar scare, though mine was for Cyctic Fibrosis. The hardest thing to do is this, but it will be so incredibly relieving once you can convince yourself of it: 1. pray & leave it in God's hands 2. don't worry about anything until you know there is something there to worry about.

Worrying and stress can cause other problems in pregnancy that you really don't want to deal with. Remember that to remain calm and take one day at a time is more important for your growing little one than to stress out.

Even if they tell you there are signs that something is/could be wrong, do not let yourself freak out about it. Symptoms can have other causes, sometimes normal stuff you just never knew about before but look scary. The doctors will NOT know until they are able to test your baby. Everything you go through will most likely be preliminary testing, just to see what the chances are, not a diagnosis, yet.

If you do find out there is reason for concern, just educate yourself as much as possible so you are ready to take on any challenges that come up. I found that knowing who to turn to and knowing more about the issue was actually more comforting than scary. I knew that I was prepared and that there is support out there for whatever I could have faced.

I know this advice is very hard to take. It was for me, but it is one of the few times I have actually taken my own advice. I now have a beautiful son who does not have CF, but is 100% healthy! I am thankful for not stressing over whether or not CF would have been an issue for our family. There is ALWAYS support available out there for EVERY situation you may face.

God will bless your little one and you, be confident in that!

Don't fret! My second daughter was on the small side and I also had gestational diabetes. She was still within normal weight and height, just on the lower end. My girl is now 15 months old, still petit and an absolute bulldozer! Big things come in small packages. Just think what great news it will be to have on x-mas that you know your baby is healthy.

Good luck!

X-mas eve was likley when they were able to fit you in... when something is a TRUE MEDICAL CONCERN, they won't wait 4 or 5 days to evaluate... it would be done THAT day, in the office or in the hospital... it sounds like they're just keeping an eye on your baby... and you want a provider that'll keep an eye on things, though the fear inducing is a bit over the top in most circumstances...
Blessings to you & your baby.. and just think... you'll get to have a picture of your baby on x-mas eve!

And BTW... we have the same nickname too

Well I looked online and it seems that women with GD can have big or small babies. Make sure you are keeping up with your diet and proper weight gain. If they are doing further testing is because they want to make sure everything is okay. From what I know (my sister is in med school so I have a lot of useful websites she sends me)the biggest side effect the baby can have is jaundice and hypoglycemia something that is easily treated.

Try to relax it's Christmas time. Everything will be okay. I promise.

I haven't been in your situation, and therefore can't really respond with details, but as a mother of three kids (all way past the baby stage), I do want to encourage you to just stop and take a deep breath, and to focus, if only for a few moments, completely on the joy that this baby is bringing you and will bring you --- and remember, this may cut into your Christmas plans, but it's only for this year, not for every year ... And years from now as you tell your child about his/her birth, these will be details that will bring it all to life.... I know you're stressed, and I hope someone else who knows your situation better will respond quickly. For today, maybe just try to focus on enjoying your 2 1/2 year old, and think of all the things that you can be truly thankful for. Your sonogram is coming up soon, so you won't be "stuck" in this place for long. I will be remembering you and your baby in my prayers.

There not much I can tell you about the medical part, but what I know for sure is that " freaking you out " seems to be the thing doctors do the best.Sometimes I would like to think they don't do that on purpose but after 2 pregnancies and way to much of worries, I wonder....
I just would like to find a way to comfort you, and remind you that stress is not what you need right now. Try to relax, probably everything will be OK.I wish you the best. Enjoy the holidays. you'll be in my prayers.
