Four Year Old Stuffing Clothes in His Underpants During Nap Time....

Hello moms...I have four year old twins, and one of my twins has a very strange nap time habit! He stuffs clothes and blankies in his underwear???Sometimes my husbands, but mainly my clothes (a shirt or socks). On top of that he'll put more clothes on his tummy to hug as he's sleeping. Has anybody out there ever encountered something as hysterical as this???? My husband and I have four boys total, and none of them to include the other twin do or have done this. I think it's a comfort/coping mechanism to make him feel secure, but it's the funniest thing I've ever encountered in my life! I'm in no way worried or concerned, as I know he'll grow out of it, it's just so bizarre and funny all in one! Anyone else out here ever encountered this? Do tell.....

What can I do next?

Thanks for sharing! My son (now 2) went through a few months befor his first birthday where he had to have my dirty shirt to fall asleep with. We have some very cute pics of him snuggled up with my shirt for his nap! Glad he not the only obsessed mama's boy :-)

Hi L.,

Thanks for putting a smile on my face this morning. I too have twins (boy/girl) but they are now 32 months old. For as long as I can remember my son has had a funny ritual at sleep time as well. He like to roll up his blankie and stuff it under him and he will roll around on it. My husband and I think it's hilarious and I never really worried about it. I guess I just figured it was a comfort thing with him. I should take some pictures and maybe a video because I'm sure he wont do this all his life :)
Anyway enjoy your boys!

i don't stuff anything down my underware but i like to sleep while hugging a pillow. i didn't give up my teddy bear until about 3 years ago. kind of embarassing but i just like hugging something while i sleep and you can't hug the husband all night... you just get overheated after awhile. i'm sure it's just a comfort thing.

That's so funny! :-)
Maybe he'd like a body pillow (when he decides he doesn't need the clothes IN his underwear)?
(a king sized pillow would be a great body pillow for a 4yo)

I think there are things that just "happen" and aren't normal but not anything to be worried about either. When both my daughters were born, my son reverted and started to wear diapers or pull ups, but he hid it. We would know that he was wearing them under his clothes or that he had them hidden under his bed and he would wear them for an hour or so and then change before bed. I don't know what was going on and I was a little worried, but we tried to just ignore it and let him do his thing. Well, he will be 13 in 2 weeks and he is completely normal, well as normal as a 13 year old boy can be, ha ha. I am glad that we never made a big deal about it. Who knows why he did it, but he got over it and doesn't remember (or so he tells me that) and all is good. I think with all the things we need to deal with when they are teenagers, we should let go of some of the crazy stuff now because it will seem like nothing later on (like when they stink really bad and are getting hair in other places, etc.)

I hope this helps you to not worry!!

Just had to say thanks for giving me something to smile and giggle about this morning. It painted such a cute picture in my mind. I am glad your not overly concerned but merely amused by your funny little guy. You'll all be looking back at this and having a good laugh one day. Make sure to get a picture. R.

Did you find out anything definite? My girl does this now and the daycare will no longer take her because they believe that there is something going on at home. Did it pass? Please tell...

Hi L.,

My daughter had a "thing". It was an old babydoll nighty that she loved to hold onto. She also would stuff this in her underwear when she slept. She is now 21 years old and I don't think she remembers doing this but she sure does remember her "thing". She named it not me.

I haven't heard of anything like this before but I have to tell you I was cracking up reading this post! Kids do the silliest things! I can only imagine coming in to get him up from a nap and finding all his clothes stuffed in his underwear. Just thinking about it is making me giggle.

I'm glad you aren't freaking out about it as you said, it will pass.

Have a great day!

Hi L.,

Mother of two here. That's an interesting story. I wonder if the security/coping behavior has to do with the state of being a twin? What I mean is that if a person was used to the "bulkiness" of someone's body and presence sharing space with them, particularly in the womb, and then they're born; that sense of comfortable familiarity with another person might be especially missed at sleeptime. Maybe he misses that and tries to recreate some of the sensations with the clothes. To me it appears that he has innovative, bright and sensitive ideas. Thanks for sharing your interesting story.

Hi L.

Thank you for sharing your sweet story with us. It's so wonderful how all our children are connected, but different. Now is the time to write stories about their lives as children the stories their children will love to hear when they are chldren. My grandchildren love to hear stories about their parents it gives them a past.

Another suggestion the gifts like pictures from school my children gave me for Mother's Day and Christmas, I saved, but not all of them had their name on them. Make sure gifts from your children you want to keep have their names written on them.

Have fun.

That is so stinkin cute.......I wouldn't worry about it, it's probably just the only place he can think of that he can stuff them and they won't fall out ha ha. He wants to keep you and your scent close..

My son wraps his blanket all around his body and stuffs the remainder between his legs for nap time...it's just comfort stuff.

I agree with the post before mine.....take LOT'S of photos.

reminds me of the Funniest Home Video's clip that had a little boy about 7 asleep and the video is his mom pulling train cars out of his pajama bottoms, there were about 9 of them in there for safe keeping :)

My son does something a little different, but it sounds like the same thing your son does for comfort. He likes to either wear 2 pairs of jammies or he likes to put his stuffed animals in his sleeper jammies. Funny stuff...but whatever makes him happy!

When I was out of town for 9 days, my daughter slept with my sleeping shirt. She rolled it up and hung on all night long. She said it smelled like me and she needed to smell me to go to sleep. Yes, she sleeps in our bed and she's 7.

Maybe he tucks it in so it won't fall away. Maybe his hips feel better. I know I sleep w/ a pillow between my legs, since I was pregnant.
