Good Morning Mamas!,
i recently was in Puerto Rico and while walking back on the beach on late evening , i found a necklace with a diamond pendant. it looks kind of vintagee. How do i find out if real?the necklace and pendant have markings but they are not legible. any suggestions? Thanks in advance
I just want to add that i was in puerto rico at the same hotel for 10 days. i did ask the other few people that were at the beach at that moment IF they had lost something. There were a few businesses right off the beach and I did go in there and also ask...AND i did inform the Hotel staff that i had found this @the beach. SInce no one claimed it by the time i left, i brought it home with me.

What can I do next?

Have you tried to find the owner of the necklace? Maybe if it was near a hotel, you could call to see if someone has asked about it. If it appears to be vintage, I would imagine it means something to the person who lost it.

Just taking a different view on "found items."

I agree with Angela. You need to find the true owner of the necklace. Just think of what you have lost before that has or has not been returned to you. I too lost a diamond cross necklace a few years back, it was in my car and someone at the dealership that I took my car to took it out of the cup holder, (It was in there because the chain broke when I was holding my son). That necklace was bought by my husband and kids for me and no one at the dealership owned up to it! I do pray that you do the right thing and try to find the true owner of it.

A jeweler will be able to tell you if you found a diamond or a really good looking cubic zirconia stone.

I agree with the others...any jeweler should be able to tell you quickly what you have. I also just wanted to stretch my humble opinion and plead that you try to find the necklace's owner. I recently lost my watch...well, left in on the treadmill at the FAC. My heart sank when I realized what I did. My watch, the watch my husband hand picked for me when I gave birth to our first daughter, was sure to be on someone else's wrist by now. I frantically called the gym and someone, some gracious soul had turned it in. it's not a cheap watch, it could have very easily been kept, but it wasn't and I'm forever grateful.
If the necklace you found is indeed real, chances are great that it too has the same sort of story behind it, only right now it doesn't have the happy ending that mine did. Please consider finding the owner.

Have you taken it to a jeweler to have them take a look at it?

If it is a real necklace, chances are, it would have some kind of registry back to the jeweler who originally crafted it. I'd guess that someone may have some sentimental attachment to it and would want it back (perhaps even offer a reward) if you can trace it.

Only a jeweler will be able to definitely tell you if it's real as many labs are now creating diamonds, too, and jewelers can craft items to look vintage.

Take it to a good jeweler and they can tell you if it is real or not. A lot of real diamonds (especially sentimental ones) have some type of marking to identify it.

EDIT::: In NO way am I suggesting you get a value for the diamond and keep it. After I read a couple of the other responses, I realized that my response might have come across the wrong way. I am all for finding an owner if at all possible.

I know the pieces I have are very sentimental (and valuable) and I would hate to think of someone finding a piece and not at least trying to locate me. Hopefully the person who lost it is insured as well.

Good luck
