Formula Allergy at 10 Mo.?

My 10mo. old son has been having diarrhea for 2 weeks now. This happened once before. I have taken him to his pediatrician, but the doctor always says to wait it out because there is nothing that can be done. He has been eating a bland diet with no new changes. He almost always has the diarrhea sometime after he drinks a bottle of formula. He has been on the Enfamil formula with iron for several months now and hasn't had a problem up until now. Is it possible that he has now developed some type of allergy to the formula? Please feel free to give me any advice on how to alleviate the diarrhea!

What can I do next?

E.,
It could just be a virus, or it could be the iron in the formula, or something else altogether. First, I highly recommend buying a good Kefir from the store. Helios (sp?) is a great brand if you can find it. It sounds like she might be needing a re population of the good bacteria in her intestines. Ideally, you'll want her on something that contains Bifidobacterium infantis, such as
<http://www.udoerasmus.com/products/probiotics_infants.htm>

If considering a change in formula, and you're not on WIC, try looking into one of the formulas offered by <http://babysonly.com/index.php>.

Best of luck!

Hi E. - FYI, if nutramagin is medically necessary and the pediatrician writes a note, your medical insurance may cover the cost. If you have medical insurance and your doctor tells you to take nutramagin ask them AND contact the insurance company to find out. Also, some insurance companies require you to contact them prior to buying the nutramagin. And, your doctor may have some samples of the powder.

By the way, my daughter had diarrhea when she would be getting teeth and it could last a while. Any teeth? Also, there is a virus going around but 2 weeks sounds like a long time to have diarrhea.

Good luck!
S.

Hi,
I'm not sure if You tried giving Him PEDIALITE in between Bottles but I suggest with table foods(breakfast, lunch & dinner) that You give DiLuted Juice, or the Pedialite(which helps diarrhea n vomitting), or Try putting baby Rice Cereal in the Formula... this can Help too. Raisins...can cause Diarrhea, also, so if giving Raisins - only give like half a small box to snack on like 2 days a week.
Hope I can Help... My Son was the same way n he's now 18 months. God Bless you & your Family.

Hi E., I have an 18 month old daughter who is allergic to milk and eggs. While she showed symptoms of it before, we only discovered it when she was around 12 months. I would normally breastfeed but in cases when I wasn't able to, I would substitue with formula. Unfortunately, shortly after drinking her bottle she would throw it all up and become rashy on her face. It wasn't until she had two allergic reactions (yogurt and a buttered noodle) that our pediatrician referred us to the allergist. The allergist is the only sure way to know. At only 10 mos. the best thing to do is ask your pediatrician about an allergist and the nutramagin (sp?) as suggested below. Be prepared, getting tested for allergies can be a tough experience for you and your little one, but it's a necessary one.

Dear E.,
My youngest two children were on Nutramigen due to allergies to formula. My neices were on Alumentim, which is also for alleries to other formulas. Ask your doctor about these formulas. They are expensive but if you have WIC or can get WIC, they help with these.

his diarrhea could be from a cold that's going around at the moment. but i did have a problem with formulas with my daughter. we went thru about 5 different kinds before we came across one that was perfect for her. we started on similac and that made her all gassy and throwing up all the time then we went to a few different soy formulas and the problem didn't go away then our ped told us about a hypoallergenic formula that we tried and that did the trick. It's called Enfamil Nutramagin (sp?). after she started drinking that formula she slept thru the night and no more throwing up or constipation and/or diarrhea. it was great. i know that when i have a 2nd child i won't even try the other formulas, it's the hypoallergenic stuff from the start. i hope this helps you out and let me know how thing go. Great luck to you
J. :)

You could try to switch heim to the enfamil lactose free formula but never use the reduced iron. They need that for brain development. Food allergies can develop at any age and can be permanent or disappear. My one was allergic to eggs and peanuts but by age 4 can eat them now.

My friends also had a similar issue and it was due to a soy supplement or preservative in the rice cereal they were using. Try switching the cereal and if he is eating something more grainy like oatmeal or barley go back to the rice it is less irritating and easier to digest.

Also I tend to notice boys are more "runny" than girls in the potty dept. I have two girls who have the opposite problem but all the moms of boys I talk to have issues with the runs.

Hope all this helps.

my son had the same thing..but diarhea can be confused w/ loose stools... I noticed when my son started eating more solids his poop changed dramatically. It could just be a little bacteria as well - bacteria causes diarhea - bacteria is everywhere!! hope it helps

My daughter had severe allergies and it took awhile to finally figure out what was going on. The only way to really know is to go to an allergist and get tested. I had Matti on the Nutramin the milk and soy free stuff, its expensive but did the trick for her.
