Fluid in Ears

Last week my daughter cut 4 teeth in two days, she already had 3 and is almost 8 months old. She has been pulling on her ears so I took her to the peditrician and he said she had fluid in her ears but wasn't an infection but said to watch it. That was two days ago. She is really cranky, not taking good naps, I have given her motrin for pain. Is their anything else I can do? I feel so bad for her!

What can I do next?

I now this may sound funny, but take her to a Chiropracter. They can pull on her ears and you will hear a pop and then the fluid can drain. My Aunt owns a daycare and preschool for 50 kids. One of the parents is a chiropracter and he also has his little 1 year old there. Just recently he pulled on her ears at daycare and the fluid drained. She did cry at first but now she is doing fine.

I have noticed all kids go through this when they cut teeth. My daughter does the same thing. I just make sure she is elevated when drinking her bottle and switch from motrin to tylenol every other day, it will help. Even try giving her something to scrape against her gums.

Try to keep her elevated. Let her sleep in a carseat. The pressure is worse when they lay down.

It isn't uncommon to get that diagonosis, just to have to go back in 2 days for an ear infection. Just ask any mom whose child ended up with tubes in the ears. Better safe than sorry, give the doc a call. Does she have a feaver, then call first thing Monday morning. You can warm a wash cloth and place it on the ear it will help soothe the pain for a little while.
Good luck.

Take her back to the doctors first thing tomorrow morning unless she starts running a fever tonight, then take her to an urgent care. The fluid in her ears can become infected in a matter of hours/days. It sounds as if it has turned into a ear infection. I am answering as a mom of a child who had over 20 ear infections when he was younger, and I also happen to be a Registered Nurse. You can call your doctor and ask about giving Tylenol and Motrin (not at the same time, but alternating them) if she seems to be in a lot of pain. The teething pain is just making it all worse...poor little thing!
Good luck and you can email me if you have any more questions!

Hi E.~
After our son was sick for the second winter in a row (he's fine in the summer), the ped said he had fluid in his ears but it wasn't an infection...same as yours. It CAN get infected, though, so it does need to be watched. Per the doc, fluid behind the eardrum can damage hearing if left untreated for a long time. I wouldn't worry, though. Now that your doc knows it's there, they will check to be sure it dries up. Please, please don't use any 'home remedies' or watered down doses of adult meds (Im sure you wouldn't) :) to dry it up. There is no way to access the inner ear from the outside unless the eardrum is ruptured, so they won't do any good anyway! You should make sure she has follow up visits scheduled to be certain that it gets better...it will also help you catch an infection early, since it will be hard to tell while she is already pulling at her ears. Good luck! Plenty of kisses and hugs and cuddles will help her temporarily forget those teeth!!

You could try to give her a antihistamine to dry the fluid in her ears up.Like benedryl or Dimetapp..For 12-17 lbs you can give 1/4 tsp of Benedryl and Dimetapp. For 18-23 lbs give 1/2 tsp..That is from the chart my pediatrician gave me.Both are every 6-8 hours..I had to do this with mine...
