My son will be 2 in April and has a mouth full of beautiful teeth. My husband seems to think that he does not need to see a dentist for another couple of years. When is a good time to take my son to his first dental check-up?

What can I do next?

Hi L.! Your son is 20 days younger than my son and shares the exact birthday of my niece! My oldest is now 5 and I started taking him when he turned 4. My youngest (2 in 5 days) will be going for his first time at his brother's next check up so he will be about 27 months. I have a girlfriend who started taking her 5 year old right after his 1st birthday. We go to the same pediatric dentist - I would DEFINITELY recommend a pediatric dentist. Ours told me they like to start seeing babies between 2-3 years old but can start coming as soon as they get their first tooth. Best of luck and happy almost birthday to your precious son!

My son's pediatrician says when they turn 2 and before they turn 3. I took my son the first time when he was about 2 and half and has gone back once a year since then. We go to a family dentist, but they have a whole area of the office "only for kids" or pediatric dentistry. I took my son to a pediatric dentist the first time and hated it b/c they didn't let parents go back with the kids and I couldn't stand for that, so you might want to check before you go.

Hi L.,

I have a 6 and 2 1/2 yr old boys. I started taking them to the dentist when they each turned 2. For the first couple of checkups the dentist only looked at their teeth to make sure that everything was coming in good and to also make sure that they were not getting any cavities. I take me boys to a pediatric dentist in Norfolk that I also went to when I was younger. His name is Dr. Eberly. He is wonderful with my children. They let me go back with them and with my youngest I set in the chair and he lays in my lap while the dentist checks his teeth. Dr. Eberly explains everything that he is doing even to my 2 yr old. I would recommend starting them at age 2 so that they can get used to going to the dentist and not be afraid of going.

We also go to a pediatric dental clinic. My son just turned 4 and I started him (pediatrician's recommendation) at 2. They didn't really do a lot on the first visit, but the schedule him every 6 months just to keep a check. I think it was on the second visit they did x-rays, then a flouride treatment during another. The office we go to is just for kids, they don't let the parents go back if they can help it. Now Cristopher loves going back by himself with the "pretty girl". Lol, I've only seen 2 guys working there & my son is a major flirt!

Hi L.,
Usually the info that you get at your well checks will have a mention about when its time for a checkup. I think my son's first visit was when he was 3 1/2-4. Also, I prefer to use a pediatric dentist rather then a general family dentist. The ped. office tends to be more kid friendly.
