My son is 5 weeks old what would be the best thing to do when he chokes on milk or his
own saliva. I blow air over his head and sometimes that helps. I am a first time mom.

Hi S.,
I know your post is from awhile ago but I just wanted to share one experience I had when my baby girl was about seven weeks old. She was coughing after a feeding and I picked her up too quickly trying to get her up over my shoulder so I could burp her. In my panic, I moved her too fast and made it worse... I ended up calling 911 because she really started gagging and I didn't think she was breathing. Everything was fine, I definitely over-reacted but I was just so nervous. But from then on, when she was coughing or gagging (at least on milk...food is a different story because that might actually be lodged in there) I would give her a minute to get her bearings before scooping her up and making it worse. Just wanted to share. good luck and congratulations on your new boy!

Do you mean when he spits up? Just wipe his chin and make sure to burp him more often :)

Don't panic and they usually just cough or gag and that's that.

My daughter was a bit older when she truly choked on a piece of food. The doctor recommended solids at 4 months since she was ravenous and I after jarred food I tried cheerios. She sort of wheezed and looked at me with surprised eyes. I pulled her out of the highchair and held her upside down, face down with my left hand (I had my hand under her belly with thumb and finger holding her chin) and while standing laid her again my slightly raised left leg (on my tiptoe) and then slapped her on her back with my right hand. The food piece flew out of her mouth. Instinct takes over and you do what needs to be done, and when it was over I sat and cried for a few minutes from the delayed panic.
