Coughing Causes Daughter to Vomit

My almost 6 yr. old daughter has been coughing mildly during the day for the past three days, but at night, for about the first 3 hours of sleep, she has been coughing so hard it has almost made her vomit (as in the pre-vomit burp followed by gagging and heaving). Last night she finally did throw up twice. It is definitely NOT a stomach issue. The vomit is obviously a result of the coughing. Then after about three hours, she goes back to only mild coughing. Her nose is not stopped up or running, and she isn't sneezing.

Here is what does NOT help - sleeping while sitting up with pillows, humidifiers, zyrtec allergy medicine, cough drops, sleeping in another room (as in it's not something in her room that's irritating her cough). I'm at a loss. Is there any medicine you can give an almost 6 yr. old to help her cough at night? Any ideas why it is only that bad for the first three hours?

What can I do next?

This is my answer from a previous poster with almost the same question/problem:

I used to cough a lot when I was younger and also had allergies, asthma, suffered from sinunitis/rhinitis and chest colds/bronchitis/pneumonia, etc.My coughing was worse in the winter time.

My (year-round) coughing started very young in life--I think the third grade--and continued every year of my life until the age of 40, when I finally discovered the source of what was making me sick/cough.

When I was 40 years old, I went to see a naturopathic doctor and was tested (because none of my allopathic doctors could tell me why I was coughing or offer me a solution to fix it other than putting me on powerful pharma drugs/steroids). I discovered that I have an allergy to casein (found in cow milk/cow products). Since I've stopped eating anything with cow milk/casein in it, all of the issues I mentioned above went away. I got off my meds for my asthma. And the CHRONIC COUGHING I would get in the winter time--to the point I would actually pee myself, the coughing got so violent and deep--have all vanished.

I visited my Allergist (for my Asthma and allergies) after I discovered my casein allergy and told him I'd quit eating/drinking cow dairy. My test on the spro--(that machiny thingy they make you breath into) was high--off the charts! He couldn't believe that my just quitting the cow milk/casein could have such a profound difference in my breathing. In April 2010, I quit taking my Advair and haven't had even one episode or attack since. I take no pharma meds for my asthma. I don't have asthma anymore.

I would definitely consider taking her to an alternative healthcare doctor and having her evaluated/tested for an allergy to milk (I would also have her tested for other food allergies/intolerances while you're already there).

I wish my parents would have had an inkling/clue that I had this casein allergy, because I've had it from birth. I probably wouldn't have been so sickly and sickly skinny as a child. And I wouldn't be trying to get my body healthy now as an adult. I'm on my fourth year toward better health and counting.

Sounds like she may have allergies and possibly post-nasal drip. My symptoms (as does my daughters) are very similiar and I have allergy induced asthma (daughter has allergies and pre-asthma). Sounds like something is setting her off (causing the coughing). Could be just about anything in the home.

It sounds like she may have asthma. I'd get her in to see her doctor.

When my kids get sick, all three of them do this to a certain extent.

I had to take them to the Doctor, who finally gave each of them an inhaler. When they are sick, they get three puffs twice a day. It helps out alot.

I would maybe take her in to see Doctor.

It is caused by inflammation in the lungs and throat. The inhaler helps lessen that at night.

Haven't had time to read the other responses sorry but my son does the same thing, all the time, and pure honey works wonders. Also, sometimes but not often Delsym will work too - good luck - that's awful to hear.

We give our kids Delsym. They do the same thing - all 3 of them. The doctor said it's very normal because kids just don't know how to not throw up from coughing yet. So don't panic too much - but it's not fun at all.

So we do Delysm during the day while at school. We do Mucinex with a nebulizer treatment in the evening to break it all up and that's when they may throw up because all of the gunk loosens up.

When their cough is really bad, we get a prescription for Bromfed from the doctor. Target is the only local pharmacy that carries it (over CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Giant, etc)...but it works like magic.

I get this everytime I get sick now. It started for me maybe 5 years ago out of the blue. I was sitting in class (a computer class to make matters worse) when all of a sudden I got this tickle in my throat where I thought, no problem, clear my throat, cough a bit, take a sip of liquids - done! Not a chance, I started to dry heave for no reason other than it felt like I was gagging - there was a tickle in my throat that was hitting my gag reflex and I had absolutely no control over it. I am currently sick with a cold, yeahhhhh, and I am battling this random reflex all day and all night. Sometimes I can manage to get it under control and others not so much. But I will tell you that if she has whatever it is that I have that yes you are right, its not a stomach bug its just a random reflex that I can only seem to manage with drinking some liquids and even then its sometimes not possible. Ive decided that I just have the weakest gag reflex ever because I also cant even sit with something just on the tip of my lips without gagging.

I hope your daughter gets better soon!
