I had my son last July and breast fed him up until this past January. I was just wondering how soon after I stop breast feeding, should I get my first period? Please help. I am afraid something is wrong with me.

What can I do next?

Nothings wrong with you. After every child it's different. With my first child I only breast fed 6mths and it took 2 and 1/2 yrs to get my period back. Then after I had my second child and I breast fed him for a full year, it only took 3 months to get it back. My mom on the other hand after she started having children never got her period again and it was wonderful for her.

Its different for every woman. I don't think anything is wrong with you. In fact be thankful you don't have to deal with it yet lol. My period actually started the day I decided to quit breastfeeding all together. I had been slowly weaning him though.. my supply was almost gone.

S.,

Well, enjoy not having one while you don't! :) HA! You are lucky in a way, I didn't stop bleeding for five months after I gave birth and finally had to have a D&C and other proceedures to fix the problem. My doctor told me before the problem that my period would return 2-3 months (approx) after I stopped breastfeeding. Good luck to you, and hope all is well!!!

Blessings,

C.

Hi S.,

Like the others said, everyone's body is different. I had my period even though I was breastfeeding. I got my first one 4 weeks after the post-partum bleeding stopped and I didn't miss one until I got pregnant again. After him, same thing!

Enjoy it while you can!

If it has been more than a month with no breastfeeding what so ever then you need to be concerned. If you have had sex since you gave birth, get a pregnancy test. Breastfeeding is not birth control. Since you ovulate 14 days before you menstruate you could've ovulated, gotten pregnant and thought you had the lactational amenorrhea. There could also be other problems, but you would have to go to your gynecologist to determine that. A home pregnancy test is cheaper than a doc even if you have insurance. So eliminate the easy thing before scheduling an appointment.

Hi! Mine is still messed up, it took like 5-6 months to get a "REAL" one! Hang in there you should be okay. If it does not come soon, then call your doctor.

I nursed July to end of November and just got my first period this month. My doctor said not to worry about it...Now I'm wishing it had stayed gone!

With my first baby it took about 3 or 4 months to start after I finished breastfeeding... with my second it took 2 months. Just relax and it will happen. Don't worry! :)

It can take a little while for you system to get back going again. You just stopped last month, so I wouldn't be too concerned. It was a little different for me each time I stopped with my three kids. However, I did get pregnant with my second when my first was just five months old and I hadn't had a period yet - so be careful - use birth control. I wouldn't worry that anything is wrong yet. Give it another month or so and then contact your physician if you still haven't gotten your period.

My daughter just turned one on fri. I am still breast feeding. But I had the same concern. I did not start my period until she was 9 months old. I would not worry...I would count your blessings until it starts again.

I had my son in August 2005 and I got my period when he was 5 months old. I was breastfeeding as well. I know it will vary for each woman and I would just talk to your doctor about it. Don't worry, it could be completely normal. Your hormones are all messed up and that messes with your cycles.

Hi S.! I was only able to breastfeed for 2 months after my son was born and it took almost 3 months after that to have my first period. Everyone is different though. I would consult your doctor if you haven't had a period by the 3 month mark. My doc said they don't like for a woman to go any longer than that because the lining keeps getting thicker and can cause problems. It may just be that you haven't ovulated yet, but that should come soon. They can give you Provera to make you have a period if you and your doc thinks that's best. If you're really worried, I would make an appointment with your doc as soon as you can to get things going again. Good luck!!

Every person is different, but it all depends on how your body adjusts back to 'normal' hormone levels. It could take several months. At least you're not one of the unluckly ones like me who got my first period before I stopped breastfeeding. Once I cut down to two feedings a day - it came back with a vengence. You should, of course, make sure you're not pregnant if that's a concern.

It took what felt like forever for me to start my period after I had mine. I lost a lot of weight real quick and that is why my doctor said I took so long to start. Plus if you are stressed out that just adds to it all. Ask your doctor and I am sure he/she will ease your mind. Hope it helps.

check with your ob but its not that abnormal to go a few months without period and of course the obvious is the possiblity of pregnancy which only your dr can diagnose properly. good luck:)

S.,
I tried to breastfeed but my baby would not let me - she was too greedy. But, I did notice that it took about 3 months for me to start showing signs of a period. Most of the ladies I talked to said that it was about 6 months or so afterward before they started their periods again. I think if you worry about it, the stress from that might cause some problems too.

Hi S.- I nursed my first baby a year, and had my period before I stopped nursing, at around 9 months I think. Of course, they were very sporadic. Second baby I nursed a year, but I also had an IUD, so my period did not come until about 1 1/2 years after the baby was born. You didn't mention if you were on any type of birth control- this would alter your cycle.

wow...what i would have give to not of had my period back when i was breastfeeding! strange enough i was right back on regular cycle a month after my first was born. then the kicker, a great surprise!...i got pregnant with my second one while i was still nursing the first. so as you have read by other's, everyone is totally different. i had to wing my son so i could get ready to nurse the second one that was on the way!!!! if you get overly concerned always refer back to your doctor.

I'm not sure how long it may be with breastfeeding, but I went 3 months before I got mine. And it was bad! I was changing pads every half hour or so sometimes. Don't worry! It'll show up.
