hey mamas! i have signed my three year old son up for his first class, we're going with gymnastics through the johnson county parks and rec. can't wait! just wondering how it's going to go. what should he wear? what do i do? do i get to sit and watch? my son is a bit shy so if he doesn't show interest or is hesitant what do i do? just want to be as prepared as i can and try to know what to expect. we are "both" pretty introverted people, by the way, it's not just him lol. i am not the best in social situations. this is all new to me!

What can I do next?

I did a tumbling class with my kiddo years ago with joco parks and rec. We had a good experience. Let the instructor take over and let yourself have a rest! Sit back and just watch. Most of the moms there were pretty friendly. Don't hesistate to start a conversation with a simple "which one is yours?" or "have you done this class before?".

Simple starters like this can lead to lasting friendships. I joined a playgroup through people I met at Gymboree and even though we have gone our separate ways, we still keep in contact through Xmas cards and the occasional get together.

As Barbara posted, comfy clothes are fine. I would bring along a pair of sweats (Hanes, very cheap at Walmart or Target) in case it is drafty or cool in the facility. As he gets more active and starts to warm up, you can take them off.

Have fun and hopefully you will meet some new friends!

My 3 year old daughter is also in tumbling through joco, we go on Thursday mornings. She wears a leotard usually, but other kids also wear comfy clothes like sweats/t-shirts, just something comfortable that he can move in. Jeans probably aren't the best idea. Socks. No shoes are allowed.

My daughter absolutely LOVES it. She has a smile plastered across her face the entire time. It's a nice down time for me as well. I just sit back and watch her. It's good for her to take direction from another adult. The teachers are really nice too. They do really easy (age appropriate) stuff. Stretching, balancing, somersaults, bear crawls, a little on the balance beams and on the bars, and the trampoline (my daughter's favorite!).

Good luck, I'm sure he'll have a great time!

That's so great! The benefits of putting a boy in tumbling are incredible. As a former dancer and instructor, it is sometimes easier for you and your child if you actually don't stay to watch. Do you stay home with him or is he accustomed to spending time in daycare or with other care providers sometimes? If you watch him at the first class, and he just clings to you and won't participate, and you know he can have good experiences with other care providers, you might be better off leaving him at the S. class. Most kids fuss for a few minutes, then get into the class. The teacher will be able to let you know if that doesn't work out and probably make some suggestions. Good luck! I'm sure he'll have a great time!

He can just wear shorts and a tshirt or sweat pants and a tshirt. Something he is comfortable moving in. Unless this is a mommy and me class, I would just let the instructor handle your son even if he feels shy. If he is in total breakdown mode, you may need to get him and have him sit with you and watch for a while.

You do get to sit and watch, so you can just tell him "Mommy will sit right over there and watch your class. I can't wait to see what you will learn." Do not talk to him about what to do if he is nervous before hand. In my experience, sometimes they are not nervous until they realize there might be reason to be. I would just talk it up (not too much) as something new and fun. Good luck and enjoy!
