I have happily breastfeeding my 7 month old daughter and been giving her rice cereal for about a month now, she loves it and is ready to start on some more foods. Any suggestions on what to start with. I'm interested in making my own babyfood. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

C.,
Kudos to you for breastfeeding and wanting to make your own baby food!!! I did the same with my son and although there are many helpful books out there (who has time to read anyway), I found this website very helpful:
www.wholesomebabyfood.com
I would start with what is easiest for you. I never had a problem getting my son to eat veggies vs. fruits but I have heard others say different. Good luck!

I seem to remember running through the cereals (rice, oatmeal, barley) before the other stuff (sorry, kids are teens now! it was awhile ago). Banana, sweet potato, and raw scraped apple were pretty early ones for my guys.

Have fun!

I would start with veggies - most kids are bound to love fruit since it's so sweet, so get those veggies in first. I usually have done carrots and sweet potatoes first.

Good luck and remember to keep offering things even if she doesn't seem to like them - it often takes several tries and eventually they will accept most things.

Let me tell you about my expereinces with solids...lol. With my first one, everyone told me to start her on fruits first since babies have a taste for sweet things, and that she would be more receptive. So I did. We went through all of the fruits first (one at a time) and all was well. That is until I tried to give her vegies. She would take them into her mouth, and then spit them back out. Even the sweeter ones like carrots and sweet potatoes. Fast forward almost 8 years... now I have a child who eats only one vegie... Corn, and it is a rare occasion.

With my second one (who was born 3 years after the first), I decided I did not want to battle another child to eat veggies and decided to try things a bit differently. I started her on green beans, then peas, then carrots, then sweet potatoes, then corn. After we went through all of the veggies available, we started on fruits. Even after we started on fruits, she only got them once a day and got veggies twice a day. Today I have a 4 year old child who will go to a restaurant and order broccoli (sp?) with her dinner instead of french fries or some other unhealthy alternitive. Don't get me wrong, she very much enjoys fruits as well, but my point is that I have one child who despises the thought of veggies, and one who can't get enough of them. I could be wrong, but I really think it has something to do with the way I introduced the foods to them. BTW, baby number 3 just started on solids no too long ago and is on the same path as the 4 y/o!

Good Luck to you!

Hello C.. The last mom was right on. When my 5 yo was a baby I gave her veggies first and she LOVES her vegies...she orders salads with her supper and tonight a salad was her supper. With my 2 yo we did the fruits first b.c that is what is Dr recomended. My 2 yo refuses veggies and has ever since I started giving them to her. I have to sneak veggies to her. I don't know why Drs say you should start with Fruits, starting with Vegies (and prunes) made my life MUCH easier and my daughter much healthier. Best of Luck!
