how old is he?
if he is 6 months and older then yes you may start. there really isn't any order. if you do gerber jar foods, start with stage 1, they have peas, carrots, and different fruit. he may like some and reject some. try one food at a time so you'll watch out for allergies. i think the rule of thumb is introduce one new food/taste for a week while watching for signs of allergies. i started with peas stage 1, then sweet potatoes, then carrots, then squash, then the fruit, peaches, apples etc
once he accepts one food for example peas, then when you introduce the second, keep giving the first as well and so on. around 7 and a half months i started giving stage 2. there wasn't much of a difference just a little thicker mushier food. same thing with the rice cereal, little by little you'll start making thicker texture. also, except rice cereal there's oatmeal etc. my kids liked the oatmeal better because rice cereal made them pretty constipated.
let me know if you have any questions'good luck

ps if you prefer to make the food yourself, i recommend super baby foods book. it's awesome. the author went for all organic healthy foods. i made the ones i thought were good without necessarily eliminating the meats as she preferred. so just take and make whatever you want your child to eat
