Hi All,
I have my first ever Dr.'s appt. this afternoon and was wondering what all I should cover? I am 34y/o and besides having my babies and breaking my arm I haven't had a regular primary physician...EVER. I am going in for a complete physical and am gonna inquire about getting a Rx for Chantix so I can try to quit smoking.

Do I just ask for a complete work-up? Give me 'The Works' so to speak? I do not really have any problems...just want a complete overhaul/check-up :)

Am I missing anything?? I am assuming just saying I am there for the first time that they will cover everything, is this correct or do I have to ask for everything specifically??

Thanks All!

I suggest that you get a pap done, check all blood levels and I'm sure you need to be up to date with immunization especially if you have children..such as...the whooping cough vaccination. Good luck ...and make sure to see your doctor on a regular basis...Take care.

Your insurance will determine the type of care you receive, so you will need to be your own advocate. You might want to get your hormone levels tested too. That is not something they usually test in a physical, but it can reveal other issues, (but also might cost more out of pocket). Definitely keep up with your annual gyno exams too. Tell the doc what you posted here---that will give them an idea of where to start. Definitely get a full blood panel done. Remember---you are a consumer, so you can demand any test you want and they cannot refuse (as long as you're willing to pay for it!!!) Good luck!

I would ask for a full physical, but ask that they keep the lab work in one place. My husband just had one a few months ago and they had him go to like 4 specialists!! He didn't need all that... but if I were you, I'd get as much done as possible. I can't wait for my insurance to kick in, I need a 'tune up' as well!

Did you schedule for a physicial? They'll take the basic info on you such as height, weight, blood pressure, etc and then the dr will do an exam. He'll probably send you to have fasting blood work done. Discuss any concerns you are having currently and he'll figure out the next step for you.

I just had a complete physicial myself and it uncovered a couple issues that needed to be addressed. So don't be suprised if something comes up and you need follow up care.

I did this when I turned 40 and was very shocked and dismayed. They sent me all over the place. Go to this lab to have blood drawn, go here for a mammogram, go here for pap smear, diagnostic place for an x-ray for a knee issue. What a huge pain. No wonder I hate doctors. I hope you have a better experience. What I learned is that I am truly responsible for my own health. If something doesn't feel right, I'll have to be persistent to find out if something is wrong.
