A little back story... my son's father was not around when I was pregnant, and is just starting to come to his senses and wanting to be involved in his son's life :) So he came over on New Year's Eve and met some of my family and I cooked spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner. The next day, my dad informs me that spaghetti is usually the first meal a woman cooks for the man she ends up marrying. I don't know if it will ever come to that with my son's father, but I got curious and wanted to know what you mamas cooked for your hubbys the first time. I figured it would be fun to see if what my dad said was true :)
My first dinner to cook several boyfriends was spaghetti because....it's not expensive and I knew how to make it? I was young then. In my late 20s, I know I made my then-boyfriend, now husband beef enchiladas, rice, refried beans, and a small salad for the first dinner. I remember that because I was stressing out and on the verge of tears because the tortillas weren't doing right. My mom had to help me out (I wasn't warming them enough to roll properly and they'd crack....I remember yelling "it's gonna be ugly! it's gonna be enchilada casserole instead of enchiladas!" Very funny to think about now. My husband said the meal I cooked that "sealed the deal" was crawfish etouffe. He'd never had crawfish before, it was his birthday, and I made etouffe, salad, and french bread and a homemade cheesecake (his fave). I only had one helping. He ate the whole rest of the stuff himself! From then on, he begged me to make "something crawfish" every week: boiled, pot pie, fettucini, he didn't care what....just loved the stuff. Sweet memory. And I do know how to cook now. But "something crawfish" is good to serve if we've had an argument or it's a special night. I think it brings us both back to that time in New Orleans.

LOL! I believe it was chicken fried steak, home fried potatoes, and corn. We were actually living together in a one room apartment, so we had a VERY small kitchen and cooking was difficult with 2 burners and a TINY oven. ANYTHING either of us cooked was special though because of the hassle we had to go through to do it. Thanks for the post, it made me smile. It's been 24 years, soon to be 25! I love him more with every passing day. Good luck! The real question is...... what can he or WILL he cook for YOU? :)

I made some kind of chicken dinner and hot German potato salad to the one I married. I've heard that spaghetti is the worst food to eat on a first date...because of the mess. : )

so long ago i can't remember. we practically moved in together from our first official 'date' (after being *just friends* for months.) i was a TERRIBLE cook back then and generally set the kitchen on fire every time i tried. it was probably loaded nachos, that was a fave back in those days.
i've never heard the spaghetti theory!

I don't remember what I cooked. But it was probably spaghetti. You can't really mess it up, and it is fast and easy.. lol.
We ate a lot of dinners out and then graduated to' take out brought home' early on... well before I actually cooked anything for him. If it wasn't actual spaghetti, it was probably spaghetti pie, which we all still just love.
:)
I'd bet the odds are high that women do cook a lot of spaghetti for first meals together... whether they end up married to each other or not. It's about as simple as you can get... throw together a nice tossed salad (no cooking involved), and some fresh bread (bought from the local deli or bakery) and you are home free!

I don't remember what I cooked my hubby (we'd been dating forever by then), but he definitely made me pasta with homemade tomato sauce the first time he cooked--and that was before we were dating!

Are you Italian? I've never heard of the first spaghetti dinner and future husband link before.
I doubt this tidbit holds true for any Asian families or cultures where spaghetti is not common fare.
The first dinner I made for now husband was a delicious scallop and bok choy stir fry in black bean sauce. We still remember that night.
And I grew up in SoCA, mainly German family, where we ate spaghetti every week.

I can't remember the first meal I cooked for hubby (probably something yucky and burnt since I am an awful cook!) but your dad is a sweet romantic and I hope his theory is true, so that your son can grow up in an intact home, with a mommy and a daddy.
Wishing you the best,

Well, I can't remember what I cooked for my husband, but I DO remember the first meal he cooked for me....fettucini alfredo. I was so impressed that a guy would actually know how to make something that didn't come out of a box. I'm pretty sure that's when I decided to marry him. LOL

I can't quite remember but I do know it wasn't spaghetti. It might have been beef stew....? I can buy the theory....one would have to try to screw up spaghetti so that makes it a perfect meal, first or otherwise.

I first meal I cooked was a spaghetti pie. He never heard of it and everyone was raving about it. We were dating for a few weeks and on thanksgiving I brought it to his house. He fell in love with the dish. We were engaged near Valentines day and married in the summer.
We are going on 9 years of marriage. I've never heard of this particular wive tale, but maybe there is some truth to it. :)

Sounds like an old wives tale to me....OR your family is Italian and the first thing the daughters learn to cook is spaghetti...and so of course it is possible for it to be the first thing you cook for your future husband!! lol.
I don't remember the entire menu of the first meal I cooked for my husband ( he was already my husband by this time...I was still living at home when we were dating and my Mom did all the cooking). But the answers will be interesting...to see how wrong your Dad is....lol.

I'm thinking it was something grilled. Shortly after we began dating to the point of "serious" (I was then vegetarian) my now-hubby showed up with a new gas grill for my house...I guess my fridge wasn't stocked enough or something and he figured early that we would be grilling! LOL

yep i am a bit different and we have been married 7 yrs. The key to know if your gonna marry him is to picture you life together both good and bad times and if you can fall asleep in his arms.

I didn't cook the first time my Husband came over for dinner. He brought everything and cooked for me. He made yellow rice with chicken and black beans. I asked a few of my friends and here are some of the things that they cooked for their first time.
Baked Chicken
Taco's
Meatloaf
Stew
Deer Steak
Grilled Pork Chops..
Not one person mentioned spaghetti...so I my guess would be that maybe that is what your Mom made your Dad the first time she had him over.

First meal I made for my future husband was chicken in a white wine sauce with green beans and rice. I'm afraid this sounds like an old wives' tale to me. Since it came from your dad we'll have to call it an old husbands' tale in this case. Good Luck.
