My family just lost everything in a fire on Sunday. We literally have the clothes on our backs. We did not have renters insurance and that is a life lesson. I would like to know if there are any services in the south suburbs of chicago for families like mine, with 2 small kids or if anyone has any advice on what to do next. I am in a state of shock and just panic now.
The Red Cross was at the scene and they offered support, which helped get clothes to get me to work tody!

I am so sorry for what your family is going through at this time. I would suggest calling Catholic Charities, they help people of all faiths. Below is a number for the southwest side. Good luck and I will say a prayer for your family.

Catholic Charities-Emergency Services
Provides a central entry point for persons seeking assistance from Catholic Charities. Trained information counselors respond to clients needs and recommend possible assistance within the Catholic Charities service system or through outside community agencies. As part of this process, counselors may link callers with various services such as homeless prevention funds and other emergency assistance funds, benefits screenings, community casework and counseling, addiction counseling and family shelter and housing programs.

Hi M., I am so sorry you have lost everything. Is everyone okay at least?

I don't know of any resources, but I was thinking if you posted a list of things you need, people might be willing to send or drop off stuff for your family. What size clothes/shoes do you need? Do you need dishes, silverware, etc? Furniture? Food?

If you don't mind sending me a list, we'll do our best to help you out!!

You can write me at ____@____.com, I wish you the best,

K.

You and your family are in my prayers. I'm am so sorry to hear about your family's loss. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. Mommies are supposed to be stong and have all the answers, including for your husband and then something like this hits you like a brick. I don't have much to offer, and I'm not sure if your children are boys, but I have some cloths that my children have grown out of, if you could use them I would drop them off for you. I have sizes 18 mo and 4t. They are in practically new condition. I wish I could help with more.

Hi,
I am so sorry for your situation! Try Catholic Charities. My husband and I own apartment buildings in Chicago (south side) and sometimes we get tenants who have been in similar situations with the first two months of rent paid for by Catholic charities. Also, try DCFS. Remember, they are Dapartment of Children Family Services. You have children who are in need of a place to stay. DCFS will give you $$ or a voucher for a couple of months of rent. Other than that, clothes, and stuff? I am not sure. Remember, you can rebuild! You and your family are healthy. Good Luck!
