Finish Peeling from Wood Floors

I am renting a house with wood floors on the main level. I tried cleaning the floors with several kinds of liquid / mop methods (swiffer, steam mop, etc.). Everything I've tried (all supposed to be okay for wood) turns the finish a milky white and then the area peels like an old sunburn. The home's owner told me she had a maid for 10 years who put nothing but Mop & Glo on the floor every week. So there is 10 years of Mop & Glo on the floor. Any suggestions for cleaning with this in mind? Should I try to strip all the old Mop & Glo off? If so, how do you go about stripping a floor?? Please help, thanks

What can I do next?

Hi H.,

Have you tried a damp mop using vinegar and water. With wood floors, the mop can not be too wet. We have wood floors, and between the forest being brought in by the dogs, and their hair, plus the dust it is a constanyt batle for me. However, I would never go back to carpet, seing what the swiffer icks up!

Hope this helps!
Cath

The floors need to be refinished. If you have it done, it will cost a small fortune. you need to buy the stiping solution and rent a floor sander from a Home Depot and strip and sand it down. Then it needs to be cleaned free of debree and ask the people in Paint what would be the best finsh to make it durable for a family. It is a lot of work.

I would think this should be the Landlords responsiblity but if she is cheap she won't pay a penny and blame it on you for the condition of the floor.
Good :Luck,

If there's just something peeling, but the floor still looks nice, it's just the mop and glo. However, chances are it's the finish peeling. It'll look dull if that's the case. Since it's a rental, that should be the owner's responsibility to pay. You might be able to work something out to deduct it from rent. If I recall right, it takes 2-3 days of not being on the floor at all, furniture, walking, etc. We were fortunate enough to be able to do it before moving into our house. It would be difficult if you're already living there. I'd talk to the land lord before putting any money into it.

Hi H.,

I work for a furniture repair company and we work with wood floors as well. Alot of times the product used on wood floors can harm then rather than do them good. Mop and glow is one of them. To tell you the truth it may be 10 years of product coming off. On the other hand it could be the finish peeling off and if that is the case there is nothing you can do besides having them refinished. My suggestion is call Arlun floors ###-###-#### and see if they could come out and take a look. I know it is a rental so I am not sure how much work you want to put into this, but they may have a suggestion on what to use to make it better. Good Luck!
