Finding Help

I'm moving to Cupertino School District in June and need to find an Occupational Therapist who works with the whole body, an educational therapist, and a neural psychologist for my 8 year old son. It sounds horrendous for my son but it all started out with noticing that an otherwise bright boy can't write. I thought I would start looking at the local LDA (learning disabilities association) or the local chapter of CHADD (helping families with ADD/ADHD) for informed parents, but thought I would try mamasource also. Can anyone advise me?

What can I do next?

Hi N.,

My friend Paula Flower is a child advocate for children with special needs. She has a child with Rhett's Syndrome herself, so is well acquainted with our local school districts and how and where to get help, so much so, she began to help other parents as well. Her web site is www.floweradvocacy.com. I'm sure she'll e able to point you in the right direction.
Good Luck, L.

Hi N.,

I'm a parent who also lives in Cupertino. I also work at the Parent Training and Information Center in Santa Clara called Parents Helping Parents. www.php.com is the web site. On our web site there is a resources link at the top.

PHP has lots of support groups and one specifically for parents of LD and/or ADHD children. check the web site for upcoming speakers. Also, you can start a support group by contacting our support group coordinator; Denny De Harne at ###-###-#### ext 121. PHP will let you use the agency to meet.

PHP is unable to refer to a specific person, but I'm writing this as a parent and have heard such wonderful things about Terri from so many. I also have met her and found her to be very knowledgeable. I think you'd LOVE her.

There is a developmental pediatrician named Damon Korb in Los Gatos. I've heard him speak and he seems like a thoughtful, reasonable guy. He trained under Mel Levine and, so far as I can tell from my very limited knowledge of him, he uses the "All Kinds of Minds" approach. There is an OT who works in his office building, who I've heard good things about, but she has a long waitlist. The long waitlist things seems to be true of most of the OTs I've talked to, so you might want to get on waitlists sooner than later. There is also a Parents Helping Parents center in Santa Clara County that I think can provide you with some names of the kinds of professionals you are seeking (though they won't make actual recommendations about who is good/bad), and the school psychologist at your kids' soon-to-be school may have some leads.

Good Luck.
V.
