Finding Clothes for Me!

Hi all, I am becoming increasingly distressed when I see a woman my size put together and looking great. Whenever I go to look for clothes I can never find anything cute in my size that looks good and doesn't make me look awkward.

I am an odd shape. I have large hips and a small bust. I wear size 24 pants and a 2xl top. The tops never fit right because I need them larger to go over my hips but they are too loose in the bust and shoulder area.

In a month my family (of 32) is getting our family pictures taken and we were all told to wear solid fall colors and jeans. Then I also booked my immediate family (my husband and kids) to get our pictures taken a few days later. I am leaning toward blues for that picture.

I just can't find anything that looks right on me. I wear t-shirts and jeans to work everyday so I don't ever have to dress up except for funerals and weddings and when I do I feel so out of my comfort zone.

Do any of you have any suggestions of websites for me to check out. If you are a plus size person where do you go to get your clothes? What would you suggest I wear for these photo's?

Thanks Ladies!

Definitely find a tailor and bring a few outfits to try on with him/her. I think it's a rare woman who fits right into off the rack clothes perfectly.

It sounds like you could really benefit from altering your clothes! Either take an inexpensive sewing class or take your clothes into an alterations shop.

I'm not plus size but have a curvy figure, so I also run into problems getting clothes to fit right (to get pants that fit my hips, I have to settle for a huge waist). What I've learned to do is buy things that are pretty close to decent and having them tweeked at a local tailor. They can take things in where they're too loose without overtightening the rest.

I've started feeling a lot better about my figure once a friend clued me in to using a tailor. It's not that expensive to get things altered to fit just right.

I think any of us who have "different" proportions have struggled with this. The best advice I can give you is to find a great tailor! I'm not plus-sized, but finding a true petite isn't easy either. I find something that I really like (color and general shape), buy it and take it to a trusted tailor but LEAVE the TAGS ON! He tells me either "yes, we can alter that" or "no, we can't". If it's a "no", I return it. Otherwise, he can make my clothing look great!

Watch "What Not To Wear" on TLC. Stacy and Clinton are awesome and deal with odd and plus sizes all the time. Very entertaining, too.

I'm with Krista. I am a petite size 0-2 with 32DD perky boobs (not fake), and tiny waist. It is hard to buy something off the rack.

I have a great tailor and just as Krista said, leave tags on so you can return the item if the tailor can't alter it to make you look your best.

I'm all for alterations, though if you're looking for something for a photo, you might consider a better brand, b/c their cuts are sometimes better. I buy for a good fit for the largest part (hips/thighs) and adjust the waist accordingly. This doesn't work for all brands so if the difference seems too big to resew, it probably is.

And just to clarify one of the possibly misleading alterations statements below, you only leave the tags on until the tailor can determine if he/she can alter it. If it's altered, and still doesn't work, you cannot take it back. My alteration lady always removes sales tags before she does the work, which is fine. I know some people do that for formals (wear, keep tag on, return) but it's unethical and unfair to the next consumer/store.

What about a cardigan on top, with just one button buttoned at the neck or at the bust?

womanwithin.com sells plus size clothes. I've had good luck with them. FashionBug.com has cute things off and on. Catherines is connected with Lane Bryant and has cute things too. I tend to buy on-line and return what doesnt work.

Where do you shop? What brands/stores?

I am "plus sized" (I can't stand that word) and I shop at Lane Bryant, Torrid, Maurices, and Old Navy for the majority of my clothes.

I have really good luck at Fashion bug or try online. I am a pear shape too. I found a really cute dress there for our upcoming cruise.
