I am looking into filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Has anyone ever filed on your own without an attorney? I was on the internet and I saw quite a few do-it-yourself sites. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi T.,

I have filed for chapter 7 back in 2005. I had quite a bit of debt, and we did go through a lawyer. it was like $700 but totally worth it. I know so many people that have told us to try a debt cosolidator before filing and we had and it was a total rip off and waste of time for us. It was a relief to not have to pay your debt anymore and creditors cannot harras you by law once you've have a file. It's been 3 years post bankruptcy (4 in august) and its really not that bad. Our credit score is pretty good. Last I checked my husbands was in the high 600's and mine was in the mid 600's. Not stellar, but good for have bankruptcy on your record.

T.,
Talk to an attorney to get all the facts to see if BR is in your future. I filed in 1999 (I was single) and am now getting my credit back (score 725).

You NEED an attorney! I just went through it and there is lot more to it, and when some creditors kept harassing me, all I had to do was make a call to my attorney and he took care of it. Also, court would have been more intimidating if I did not have my attorney sitting next to me answering questions and taking care of all the ppwk.

Hi T.,
My sister filed for $300, and I am also thinking about filing.
He prepares all of your paper work, but you have to go to court by yourself.
There's also another fee for filling but the whole process is under $500
Email me if your interested and i'll give you all of the info.
Good luck

I have not heard of filing BK w/out an attorney. I work in a collections area of a Bank and have never had a customer file w/out an attorney representing them. I don't recommend doing it on your own.

Hi T.,

I have filed for bankruptcy before a few yrs ago and if you have alot of dept I would say that it is a good idea. Divorce can be hars and leave you in debt. I went to a guy that did it for 500$. He was really good and handeled everything. He went to court and I didn't have to be there. Everything was setteled quickly too. It helped me alot but it stays on your credit report for seven yrs. so it is hard to an apartment, car etc. I am a single mom as well. So do what you need to to help yourself back on top of things for your kids. Good Luck and let me know if I can help you with any other questions.

I wouldn't try to do it yourself, the paperwork and time that is involved with an attorney is rather extensive, and they know what they're doing!
I went with a great lawyer out in Utica, but know several others all over the area (due to my job) if you'd like some names.
