Hello all! I have been married for 9 years. I have 2 children, ages 13yrs & 7 yrs. I've been trying for 5 years to have another child. I've went to infertility and all the blood work came back fine. The doctor wanted me to have some kind of test to check if my tubes were twisted. I was too chicken. I just keep praying. Any advice. Has anyone had that test? It's a vaginal ultrasound. Can anyone tell me if it's painless.

I've had a few vaginal ultrasounds and they're not so much painful but they are uncomfortable. It really depends on the tech doing the test how gental they are with you. I only had one slightly painful experience and that's because she pushed it up a lil too far.

But if you are serious about getting pregnant you should be willing to go through anything painful or not for it, so you shouldn't chicken out, just be strong and know you're doing this for something well worth it.

Good Luck

I had an ink dye test done to see if my tubes were blocked...and that was very painful, however it did let me know that they were NOT blocked, but I do have PCOS....maybe you should get tested for that....I would tell ya to take the test, just so you know, and if they are twisted or whatever the case is, you can take care of it...without doing it you will never know. I'm a huge chicken about pain, but I would say that it may be worth it....

Through all of my fertility issues I had many vaginal ultrasounds. I didn't experience any pain with any of them (a little discomfort, maybe).

One thing I do know for sure, God's timing is not always our timing. If it's meant to happen it'll be on his schedule...and if it's not meant to happen, he'll bring you through that, too.

Hi T. -
After trying to get pregnant for a year we went to a specialist (Dr. Diaz of West Coast Fertility Center) and both got tested. Turns out our infertility problems were on my husband's end. Has your husband been tested? Just a thought as tests came back fine on your end.

Best of luck to you!!

I believe it's probably an HSG. I think that's what it's called , it where they shoot dye inside and watch to see if the dye goes all the way thru your tubes.I have a friend that had it done and she said it did hurt a little. Have they checked your husband at all ? Me and my husband went through infertility as well but my husband had cancer so we knew it was him. And we already have a 3 yr. old.So we actually did Artificial Insemination and I got pregnant the first try. So now we are expecting #2.
I would go ahead and get the HSG test done if you really want more kids. At least then you will know where to go next. Good Luck

The vaginal ultrasound, while uncomfortable, is painless. I had one when I was 9 weeks pregnant with my son. No side effects, and like I said, just uncomfortable.

I had a vaginal ultra-sound when I was about 10 weeks pregnant with my son. It does not hurt at all, and is actually less stressful that a pap-smear. It's a sort of wand-like apparatus that doctors use to give an ultra-sound internally. Being that you have had children before, it will not be any more invasive than any previous exam you have had, and again, it does not hurt the least bit!!
I wish you the best of luck in becoming a mom for the third time!!

I went through a ton of testing in order to get pregnant, the whole gammit of infertility. A vaginal ultrasound is less painful then your annual pap, its not a big deal, just awkward and uncomfortable as all vaginal testing is! However, if they want to do an ink test (which is a to test if the fallopian tubes have a blockage in them), now THAT one is very painful. Its nothing you can't get through, I mean, you've been through labor, but it is painful. Hope this helps:)

Don't worry!!! It's like everyone has said, less uncomfortable than the annual exam. It's smaller than a man's (or at least probably most men) and there's only a little pressure when they are moving it around. If you really want another child, it will be WELL worth it. For me, I had that done and then they did another procedure. I forget what it's called, but they basically inserted a TINY little tube into my uterus and injected dye and took x-rays to see if I had blockage in my fallopian tubes.

I will send some prayers your way. Just remember to rest in Him, because the ultimate answer is His. He has a purpose for all!!

:) Your kids are too old for you too have been through this. I have four, 10, 9, 4, and 11 months, and only had this done with the last one. But as the other mom said, it really is no big deal. It's more comfortable to me than the annual exam... certainly not as cold... and it can be a valuable tool. I was able to see the heart beating, body and brain structure on my first visit at around 11 weeks when my daughter was only about 3 inches long! So I'm sure they will have no problem using this procedure to determine if this is in fact your difficulty. Best of luck!

If it is just a vaginal ultrasound, it is pain free. It is less uncomfortable than a regular vaginal exam. The probe is very thin and is inserted into the vaginal so they can see. I wouldn't be scared at all. Good luck.

Hi T. :)

My hubby and I also tried for 5 years. I finally assumed I was infertile. About that time tho, I got on a health kick and got on a parasite cleansing program. My periods--which were very random--became like clockwork. Shortly after finishing that I cut all additives out of my diet and started eating more simple fresh foods. I dropped 15 lbs in 6 weeks and got pregnant.
I'm not sure what your eating habits or health is like at the moment, but working on getting your body into a healthier state might be the answer. ;)

Best of wishes,
M.

vaginal ultrasounds are completely painless... just a little odd feeling. I say, if you really want another child, do the test. How do you know this Dr wasn't an answer to your prayers?

T.,

Wouldn't life be so much easier if we really could map it all out and have everything go as planned? Easier I suppose, but probably not quite as interesting!

Speaking from experience (3 in-utero fertilizations and 3 in-vitros later) we have an amazing little girl who is almost a year.

The first thing that I can say is to make sure that you have COMPLETE confidence in your doctor. We had a doctor in Pennsylvania (where we did the IUI) and then we moved here to LA and it was a complete world of difference.

Secondly, listen to your gut (although with a 13 and 7 year old, I'm sure you already know the value of that!)

Thirdly, a vaginal ultrasound doesn't hurt AT ALL. In fact, it doesn't compare in the least to an annual exam. They simply use a wand and insert it like they would a speculum but they don't crank anything open and it isn't hanging free!

Also, before we had any info. about our situation, I had a procedure called a histosalpingogram. This is when they run a red dye through your tubes to make sure there is no blockage. Perhaps ask your doc. about that as well.

In the meantime, I totally get the prayer thing. Having delivered twins at 23.5 weeks and losing them that same day, it helped to remind me that we are not in control of anything. There is a greater plan for us and we can only pray for the strength to accept what happens.

Good luck and definitely do a google search for other websites like this one that deal where you can "talk" with other moms about fertility issues. I found a TON of info. from talking with other moms who were in the same boat. What questions should you ask your doctor, are there other options, etc...

If you are looking for a new fertility practice, perhaps check out Reproductive Partners. I cannot speak highly enough about them! An excellent reputation, excellent success record, world renowned doctors. There are offices in Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach and some other places...

Good Luck!

I too went through infertility issues with our almost 3 yr old daughter Adia (which means "Gift of God") for 5 1/2 years. We did that test it's called a hysterosalpingogram. I really didn't find it all that uncomfortable. Just a little pressure. My other friend who actually had a blocked tube did say it was painful but not so bad that she wouldn't have wanted to have it done. You can take ibuprofren to help with the discomfort. I believe there are procedures that can help if there is a blockage so it's best to rule it out.

I know it's so difficult that all the tests for women are so invasive. I will pray for you. We've been trying again since Sept, however my dh just deployed so we will have to wait until he returns to see if we'll need to see an infertility doctor again.

God Bless!

Jen

I haven't had that issue exactly. But i have uterine fibroids which makes my daughter a little miracle.

If you really want to make sure that you are ok, then do it. A vaginal ultrasound is no big deal. Did you never have any when you were pregnat? I had tons throughout my pregnancy. Slightly uncomfortable, but not as bad as a PAP.

Good luck, hope everything works out OK.

Hi- I had fertility issues for 3 years, with the works. I ended up having in vitro, and finally had a baby. A vaginal ultrasound is no big deal. If you do end up going on fertility drugs, you will have to have them all the time. Don't worry- it is totally painless and only lasts a few minutes. Good luck!

hello T.. I've had vaginal ultrasound but for a different reason. I laid flat on the examination table and a pillow was placed under my hips so that my pelvis was tilted slightly upwards. The tech inserted a wand into my vagina and moved it around a little while looking at the monitor. She would move it into position and hold it while typing things on the monitor then move it into another position and do the same thing. It reminded me of when I had the ultrasounds during my pregnancies. It wasn't painful but kind of uncomfortable at times when the wand was moved into certain positions. Hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

Don't worry. It's totally painless. It is probably uncomfortable for some people, but if you go in for a yearly pap, you're sort of are used to your doctor being in that neck of the woods so to speak. I had the first pic of my 8 1/2 mo old son from one of these. They also found a tumor that had to be removed during my pregnancy... but that's another story. Set your your fears aside. There's no pain to it. =)

Dear T. M,
Yes it's painless. I have had 2-3 of the vaginal ultrasounds. All it is a big tampon attached with a cord at the end of it. It is just uncomfortable. Meaning embarrassing. They usually have you insert it at the begining so you don't get hurt if they try it. Any other questions contact me M. Petersen
