not too soon. Start w/ rice cereal, and after 2 weeks or so, you can introduce some baby foods - sweet potatoes, peas, etc.. My daughter is 8 now, so I don't remember exactly how I went about it (sorry!) But, I do know that its good to get them used to eating veggies at an early age. I did, and my daughter eats everything I serve her with no issues.

I'm sure most will say it's too early, but I started my daughter on rice cereal when she was five months and she did just fine.

The longer you wait the less likely he is to develop allergies. I would wait at least till 6 months according to recent recommendations. I didn't intoduce solids till 10 months with mine and they are extremely healthy. I would start with fruits or veggies too.

I started my now 10-month-old on cereal when he was 4 months old and he did great. Then after a month or so we actually started the baby food with doc's approval. Every baby is different though. My sis had a hard time with my nephew who is 8 1/2 months and he is just now starting to take to cereal and baby food a lot better. I say test it out and see how he reacts. If he has a hard time with it then give him a little more time and try again. Good luck!!

Not too soon at all. Of course, all little ones develop at different rates. I started my second son on rice cereal (plain) at this age. A big bowl before bed helped him sleep through the night.

It really depends on your baby. I started solids with mine at 6 months, but if I had to do it all over again, I would have probably waited another month. She could sit and hold her eat and all of that, but she just wasn't really interested at all in food so I could have waited.

Good luck!

The only person who can really answer this question for you is your pediatrician. However, five months is a fine time to start for most babies. Again, go with your doctor's recommendation on this but rice cereal is generally a very good solid food to start with. Good luck.

Check with your pediatrician.
With my daughter I waited until she was 6 months and that worked really well for us as we were in a great breastfeeding rhythm.
My son started eating solids at 5.5 months. I just couldn't put him off any longer. He started off as a big baby (9 lb 2 oz) and never stopped. I felt he was going to tear my boobs off if I didn't give him something else. However, he has had trouble with constipation. Rice cereal has NO fiber so be on the alert and if your lil man starts to have trouble, give him some prunes along with the cereal. Boil them for 5 or so minutes until they're soft and whir them up in the blender. You can then stir them into the cereal. It works well.
Good luck!

It may be. There are certain signs of readiness that you can look for to see if your baby is ready to start on solid foods. This link takes you to some information about the signs of being ready. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/readyforsolids.htm

You will know when he is ready if he can move the food from the spoon to the back of his mouth and swallow it without gagging. Start with the cereal very thin, and if he gags, wait a couple of days and try again. They develop this ability anywhere between 4 and 6 months. Both of my boys started solids at 4 months and did great!

This is a good link.
Also check with the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Next: ask your Pediatrician.

It is not by age, but ALSO by the baby's developmental cues... if the baby still has his tongue-thrust reflex for example, he is not ready.
Most recommend waiting until 6 months old to start.
And you have to know which foods to introduce first... and per their age and allergies. NO honey for example.

Also, you still must nurse on-demand for the 1st year. Per our Pediatrician, breastmilk or Formula is a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition... NOT solids and NOT other liquids. Feed/nurse on-demand, 24/7 and especially BEFORE solids... otherwise the baby will "wean" from breast/bottle. And the baby will be TOO full to nurse/drink from bottle, if given solids first.

I would really ask your Pediatrician, for a recommendation.

all the best,
Susan

He may be too young. Check with your child's ped. Mine said not to start the rice cereal (in a bowl not a bottle by the way) until 6 mos as their digestive systems are immature still. So check w/the doctor as each child is different. Then remember when you do start baby food to stick w/one new food for at least 3 days before introducing a new one to rule out any allergies.

Around 5 months is a good age , just remember to only give a little and make it slightly thicker than his milk while he get's used to it. It will be messy while he learns to take from a spoon and most will end up down his chin. Just remember to take it slowly and don't introduce too many new foods too soon.

Have fun!

like the lower post says, you'll know when he's ready...but personally if i could do it over again, my daughter would've never touched baby food....i would've given her table food...seriously baby food and table food taste nothing alike and i still have issues getting her to eat and she's 7

As long as he is showing keen interest in non-baby foods that is one sign but if you can hold off another month, it might be best, esp. for food allergies and sensitivities. If his appetite is a lot more than you can handle, you may want to just try barley cereal for a month on top of whatever else you are giving him (breastmilk, formula).

Check out wholesomebabyfood.com for tips on starting your son on solids and which foods to introduce for his age.

Good luck!
