It might depend on your age, and the general age of the people who will be attending. I personally don't wear pantyhose, but my mom always does. If you are wearing a halter top dress in December you might want to buy a cute wrap or something and I would say if you are <35 go without pantyhose. I think it really is whatever you are comfortable in. If there are a bunch of 40-60 year olds there though, they might "frown" on bare legs!

If you are wearing a halter-style dress that is pretty bare up top then do not wear panty hose.
I would opt for some shimmer (not glitter!) lotion to give your legs a kind of glossy look and maybe an open toed strappy heel to compliment the halter dress.
Sounds like a lovely elegant party! Lucky you! My husband's work is throwing a barbeque (yeah.....)

I may be old fashioned, but I think that bare legs with a formal gown is tacky. I go to parties at the Biltmore and it seems like everyone is wearing some kind of hosiery so my advice is to try on your outfit with both beige and black to see what looks best. Your young ladies may be setting the trend for the future, but the people at the party will be more mature, I'd bet.

I'd wear hose if I felt it was appropriate for the event but it also depends on the outfit you're wearing. Sometimes bare legs are fine depending on your age and the age of the people you'll be with. I think most women are currently wearing the textured/patterned hosiery or colored, opaque tights rather than the plain sheers but that may be more for the younger population. I'm not much of a fashionista so I tend to wear what I feel comfortable in even if it may not be on the cutting edge of current trends. The gown you described sounds as though you could go bare legged and maybe use a wrap around your shoulders as the previous post suggested. That way you won't feel over-exposed.

I would wear what you're comfortable with that way you can be natural and not feel self conscious about what's on your legs. If you feel good about what you're wearing, you'll be more confident at the party. I hope this helps! =)

I've been wondering about this myself.....I was just at a black tie at the Biltmore and I wore pantyhose. But it was a long gown. But it seemed like a lot of ladies were bare footed. I think the Spanx are popular - footless pantyhose, so you get the support but can still wear strappy heels. I also have a holiday party at the Biltmore and will wear a cocktail dress too. I think I may wear pantyhose(nude)with my black dress. Maybe it's a generational thing ?
