Moms,

About 20 years ago, a great uncle of mine did some serious investiging into our family history. He put his findings in a bound book that details includes photocopied pictures and our releatives all the way back to the 1850s.

So that our entire family can enjoy his work, I would love to transfer the information in an online format. I've heard of Ancestry.com and others, however, I wanted to know if any of you have used these sites and which you would recommend.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks, Moms!

I have used Ancestory and have found out a lot. Sometimes there are discrepancies...if the info is wrong, it is from other family members input. That is where the fun begins and you start to communicate with distant relatives to compare and exchange notes. You can find out a lot for free, then certain things start to cost.

Try myfamily.com (it's free!) It's an elaborate site, and it's easy to use.

K.,

Look into MyHeritage.com. It's a free site, you can invite members and assign permissions. I use it and it's been extremely easy. There's the ability to add pictures as well as several different details. For instance, I made an illness notation on my daughter's record and my father's aunts records regarding the genetic Bi-Polar disorder.

Special reports and printing can also be done. I think it also interfaces with a desktop version of MyHeritage but I'm not sure on that one. I also saw that you can import a specific format that must be output by several other ancestry software programs.

It's free so I'd definitely check it out.

Hi K.,

I have done genealogy research on my family for about 13 years now. I have all of my information in a program on my computer called Family Tree Maker. It is compatible with ancestry.com and can be uploaded to their site. I would check before you do anything that non-members can access the family tress on ancestry.com before you all have to join and pay fees. I'm not sure what is free to the public and what is members only information. It is a wonderful website, though. You might get the genealogy bug if you start!

Have fun,
A.

My family uses www.geni.com. It is a great website. Only people in your family can view the information. Your family members can add their own pictures and information if they want. It reminds you by e-mail of birthday and anniversaries. It even helped my son with a family history report by looking at the family tree. Check it out.

It is called Geni. geni.com. This is a wonderful web site and way you can put history and they will send a family update, birthday reminders, and anniversary. Family members can also chat and leave messages.

It is wonderful.

We've used Geni- and have LOVED it. IT sends birthday reminders and lets you comment directly to each other.
We have ours going back to the civil war here- and it was done through finding relatives who had information our branch didn't.
Good Luck-
K.

I don't know of any websites for ancestry, but I did put a creative memories storybook together online of my family history with pictures, info, etc., was able to share it with my fsamily online and then anyone who wanted to have a copy, ordered it. if it sounds like something you'd be interested in, let me know and i can give you more details.
