False Positive??? - Lincoln,CA

Hi everyone. I'm hoping to get some responses to make me feel better about all of this. Here goes: My period was due on Wed the 18th, but I didn't get it. So, on Friday morning I took a home pregnancy test (Clear Blue Easy). The test was positive! I was thrilled, but also nervous because I had a miscarriage last year. So, just to be doubly sure, I went to Kaiser a few hours later and took a urine test there. I called back for the results the next day and the test was negative! What happened!? How could I get one positive test at 6:30 in the morning, and then a negative test at 11:30? I've heard of a false negative, but is there even such a thing as a false positive? So, I talked to the advice nurse on the phone and she said to come in on Monday (tomorrow), for a blood test. To make matters even more complicated, I started having some bleeding today. It's nothing heavy - just some dark brown when I wipe. I don't have any cramping or anything. I know that some women spot when they are pregnant, but I didn't with my son.
The thing is, though, that I feel some pregnancy symptoms! My breasts have been sore for about a week, and I've been very tired lately.
So, even though I'm taking the blood test tomorrow (and I should get the results by Tuesday)I still wanted to see if anyone could help make sense of this for me. Has this happened to anyone?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their responses. Unfortunately, I still don't know what's going on! I was supposed to go in for the blood test on Monday, but then my period started. I called Kaiser and they said to wait until the bleeding stops, and then to come back in for another urine test. I just assumed that because my period started I wasn't pregnant, but the nurse said some women get periods when they are pregnant. That's never happened to me before, though. So, I am just assuming that I'm not pregnant until I hear otherwise. It's very disappointing, but I don't know how else to think. I still don't know why the test came back positive when I took it at home, but I guess I'll have to wait and see. I will keep you posted!

I would go out and buy another home pregnancy test. I have also heard that there are no false positives. If those home pregnancy tests say you are pregnant, then you are. If I were you I would take another one so I dont have to wait til Tuesday for the results.

Yea, the most accurate is first thing in the morning. Anyway, I hope everything is ok. I will pray for you and your family/new pregnancy.

I have had this happen to me with this pregnancy. I took a test early in the morning and it was positive and then just to make sure I went to the dr's and it came out negative. The dr. told me that there is no such thing as "false positive" so she did a blood test to make sure and when I got the results it was positive. She told me that the reason why one of the test came out negative is probably because it's too early in the pregnancy and sometimes some pregnancy test can't read the hormone right away.

As for the bleeding I would go see your dr. right away because you've had a miscarriage before and that could be a problem. Some woman don't realize that they had a miscarriage and mistake it for a period. I know that's happened to me one time.

I wish you the best and hope it all turns out well!

A....

Your hormone levels are generally higher in the AM, than in the PM. And the dark spotting could be implantation. Which are all good things.

If you go in for a blood test, regardless of time or day, your results will be the same. Urine is the test that dilutes througout the day.

Hope this helps...
And keep me posted.

Hi,

I say just wait for the blood test. It is the most accurate. I was pregnant with my daughter and had a negative pee test and positive blood test. Plus I was spotting so I didn't know what to think. But it's all normal, be patient. Your true results are in the blood test.

GOOD LUCK!

Yup I agree with Robyn... It could have been that when you went to take your Kaiser test there was not enough hormone in your urine. Testing positive in the morning, when you would have the highest concentration of hormone, and to test negative later that morning isn't surprising. The blood test will definately tell you for sure.

Also in my case, I spotted with all 3 of my kids, just like you had described. I was told that it was the egg implanting. But each woman is different obviously, as well as each pregnancy is different. I would definately see what happens with the blood test.

Good luck :)

You could have just tested when there was not enough hormone in your system to show up on Kaisers test - when I was pregnant with my daughter all the pregnancy lines on the tests were super super light which I thought was wierd b/c I was already late for my period... so I took a test at the OB and they came back in my room and said it was negative... then ten mins later they came in and said it had turned positive! They said that the urine tests they use in the office are not any better than over-the-counter ones and in fact a few brands are even more sensitive than theirs. The blood test will tell you for sure but if you want to take another test I reccommend First Response - they are very sensitive and not known for producing false positives. Good luck to you and remember that everything will happen as it should for a reason!!! :)
