Nope... not normal. But totally fine. It just means that she's a very active sleeper and her sleeping mind isn't aware of the edge. I'd probably put the rail back on so that she gets better uninterrupted sleep (and so you do too).
Is it normal for my 4.5 year old DD to keep falling out of bed. Basically every other night she thunks on the floor. The rest of the time I find her hanging out and push her back in. We took the rail off a year ago. I would think her mind would grasp that there is an edge there by now.
Thoughts?
I would definatly put the rail back up, but she does not want it. She is really into being a big girl and the rail 'is for babies'. I have a big body pillow and a blanket on the floor next to her bed so just hits those. She does not get hurt it's just kind of weird.

Put the rail back on. Sounds as though she needs it. Her mind might but sleepy body does'nt. Good luck.
I wonder if she's thinking "I keep falling off, you'd think mom and dad would grasp putting the rails back up by now." Is there a reason you won't? I'm truly not trying to be harsh, but it seems like a simple fix!!
I assume she's not falling off the top of a bunk bed?
If it's a regular bed and she's 4.5 I'm sure she'll be just fine.
I can't remember ever hearing about someone being seriously injured from falling out of a regular bed, unless they were an infant, or drunk :)
Put the rail back on, or put the mattress on the floor and dispense with the frame. It obviously isn't teaching her anything to push her back in.
After we took the rail off, I would place a second pillow on the bed next my sons to keep them from rolling off. Like you, I put a pillow on the floor too.
My daughter is a very active sleeper as well - she just turned 5. Since having her in her big girl bed I've put my body pillow on the bed next to her to keep her from rolling off. I'm not sure if she will fall out if I don't have it there but I figure, why try it. :) Once in awhile I find the pillow on the floor or her lower half of her body hanging over the pillow and off the bed.
My daughter at 16 would still fall out of bed. If she is in a King size bed she never falls out, any smaller and she is all over the room.
Same with my granddaughter. If she is in a twin I can go in her room at any time and find her asleep under the desk, under the bed, on top of the toys mound, etc...she is the worlds worst sleeper. One time she fell asleep on the couch and I heard a noise, she had rolled over onto my serger foot feed. I had turned it on but not the light bulb. So I had forgotten it was still on. She was asleep on the food feed and it was serging away.
LOL! This brought back some memories. My husband & I would be downstairs& we'd hear the thump! Our son would still be sleeping--on the floor.
It passed.
Just make sure there's nothing she can hit her head on while she's falling (nightstand, etc.).
It was a phase for mine anyway, hope it passes.
My sister used to fall out all the way through high school.
My 4 year old will if his sister doesn't end up in bed with him (and on the edge). I forgot to move him closer to the wall one night before bed...and I woke up to a loud thunk...and ended up making an ER trip at 2 am because of a split chin...due to falling out of bed! There was nothing on the floor (I hunted for legos, etc.). On the way home, he said, "That was a adventure, let's do it again." Needless to say - not one I want to repeat! If you have carpet - you might be fine...but don't be like me and assume that falling off a low bed (bottom bunk...no box springs...just the mattress)...can't do some damage!
Put pillows on the floor to brace her fall.
