We had little bed rails that kept the kids from rolling out, but still allowed them to get in and out on their own. I've heard of some people using a pool noodle under the fitted sheet to act as a barrier.
I recently moved my 16 month old to his toddler bed (converted crib). He moves so much in his sleep he rolls out multiple times a night. I've been sleeping on a mattress on the floor next to him for the past week.
Any ideas on how to keep him in there? I cannot convert back to a crib, he would not sleep in in ever.
Thanks

A pool noodle under the fitted sheet should contain him if he's rolling, or use a rolled up towel or blanket. The sheet will make it smooth, but a barrier of sorts will be there. I've used them all at various times for babies and toddlers with success :)
As S.H. said, you can also put his mattress on the floor.
Put his mattress on the floor too.
In many cultures, they sleep on the floor.
Definitely try the mattress on the floor. We actually went crib to twin mattress on the floor to twin bed (skipped the toddler bed altogether). I mention that only because the twin size mattress might give him more room to twist and turn and lessen the chances of him falling off.
I still do this with my 3 1/2 yr old. I take a thick blanket and roll it up tight and place it along the sides her bed under the fitted sheet and she has not once fallen out since I started doing this. I also have those foam playmats on both sides of her bed as an extra precaution
Good Luck
Google using one of those pool noodles as a bed rail. I've heard that they work great, give just enough barrier, and are a cheap fix. You can get them at Dollar Tree.
My kids went from crib to a twin size mattress on the floor at around 18 months. It worked well for all three of them and no worries about falling! Is that an option? I mean you've got the mattress in there anyway you may as well let him sleep on it instead of you.
1. you can get a bed rail.
2. let him fall and get back into bed - if you feel better lay a blanket down
3. put his mattress on the floor.
My son moves - just like his mama - and just like me had to learn how to not fall out of bed the hard way.
1.put the bed next to a wall
2.buy a bed rail
3.put The bed rail on his bed
4.put a blanket on the ground just in case
5.don't sleep next To him anymore
Rails and get out of his room! He gets used to that you will be in there forever!
Oh, my! Your post reminded me of how my now nearly 14 yr. old was!! lol She'd roll out of bed, awaking me out of a sleep with a "THUD". I put those big body pillows on the floor (though a mattress would probably be better) next to the bed, so when she fell, she fell on softness and just continued to sleep. I don't know if your little one will just continue to sleep after falling, but it's an idea. Of course, you can get the rails that slide under the mattress and has the barrier so they don't roll out as easy, I guess.
Good luck and good dreams to you all!
What does it matter if he rolls out. He's not far off the floor so he can't get hurt, he's staying asleep so he's okay. I'd put the bed in a corner so that the one side is completely against the wall. Then put a body pillow against the side of the bed he still has open.
skip the toddler bed and just put the mattress on the floor.
My son went from crib (he could climb in and out of it) to a twin bead at 3 1/2.
We put extra long drop down bed railings on both sides (even the side against the wall) and he was fine.
He REALLY liked how many stuffed animals he could fit into twin bed with him!
We did a mattress on the floor when we moved Kiddo out on his own (he was three and cosleeping until then). We also used a side rail on our big bed and then again when we moved him to the raised futon downstairs.
ETA: READ the bedrail info. Mist are NOT for use with toddler beds.
For $1? I'd try the pool noodle!
If there isn't a railing on the open side, buy one at Target or a similar store. It has one side that opens up and slips under the mattress. Viola! you have a railing to keep him in bed. A railing similar to the ones that come with a toddler bed only it can be removed and put back easily.
My mom suggested to get foam tubes, and stick them under the sheet at the edge of the bed. It will be like a barrier.
A rolled up towel or pool noodle under the fitted sheet will keep him from rolling off.
Hi,
I had the same problem, so I got my daughter a bed rail like this one on amazon. You can even install it if your convertible crib already has a half a rail. Thats what i did. Hope that helps.

Push the bed to a wall, and attach a bed rail to the other side. Lay down a mattress or blanket just outside the bed, and stop sleeping next to him.
If he does roll out and fall, am sure it won't be a very high one. And he'd have the mattress to shield him.
The railing should do it. And just in case he does roll and falls AND wakes up, go in, soothe him and put him back to sleep. He'll soon reach the age where he doesn't roll too much.
Good luck!
Oh my gosh!!! LADIES!!!
I just moved my daughter ( a little over 2) to a toddler bed (converted crib) and was wondering the same thing. She hasn't fallen yet, but she sure might.
I had never even THOUGHT about putting a noodle in her crib sheet.
That is just brilliant.

The pool noodle sounds BRILLIANT!!! My son has fallen out just a few times, but the bed is so low that he has never gotten hurt. I would not worry too much about it. We used to lay a thick blanket down so he wasn't falling on our hard floor, and he learned quickly not to roll around so much.
My niece used to fall out all of the time from a win bed onto a hardwood floor. She would just sleep right through tthe fall and we would either hear the thump of her falling or just find her there the next morning. If your son is not bothered by it don't fret. If he is upset about falling, give him a quick snuggle and get him right back in bed. There is no reason for you to have to sleep in his room . . . he will be fine! :)
