Failed Glucose Test

Hi Moms. I just learned that I failed the 28-week glucose tolerance test. Cut-off was 130 and I came in at 137. I know everyone's different and every pregnancy is different (this did not happen first time around for me), but I was wondering if anyone failed the first, but passed the second. Or if the second procedure is horrible (I hate having blood drawn - lucky me!) And do you know if being addicted to Oreos could have contributed to this - ha ha (not kidding). Though, I have also been eating healthy - Oreos are my treat. Thanks, Moms!

What can I do next?

I failed it once and the second came out normal. Please don't ask me which kid, I can't remember which one had braces twice at the moment.

My sister failed the first one and passed the second. Also, my dr. used 140 as the cut off and I recently read an article that said that using 130 will catch a few more cases of GD than the higher number but it will also result in a lot more women failing the first test but passing the second. Good luck.

I had GD withy my second pregnancy. IF you do end up having gestional diabetes, do not feel like its your fault for loving Oreo's. It's basically hormones from the placenta rejecting the natural insulin your body makes. So when you go for your second test, it's a three hour test. You will have blood drawn three times (once every hour after you drink). If you doctor calls you to say you do have GD, do not cut out all carbs. Quick lesson in carbs, 15 grams is one serving. Check the labes regarding bread, pasta, etc to see how many servings you can have (probalby half a cup of pasta, once slice of bread) and it the carbs with LOTS of protein to help your body absorb the sugar (so eggs, cheese, meat with your tiny tiny portion of potatoes, pasta or bread). You will be sent to a nutrionist (sp? sorry) and she/he will make up a "diet" plan for you. Again, NOTHING you did wrong. Just your body and it's hormones. Good luck!

Stress will raise your blood sugar. And yes the Oreos are a problem. Try to have more protein snacks, almonds, etc. They help blood sugar levels.

I failed the first but passed the second.

My "failure," I'm pretty sure, was due to the fact that I ate my hour 3 hours later than usual (terrible, busy day at work), and instead of eating my lunch 4 hours before my glucose test, I ate 1 hour before. I did call the doctor's office and ask them about & ask if I needed to reschedule. They said, oh no, that's fine it's not a big deal. Yeah, right. After failing & then 3 super-stressful days of thinking I'd failed my baby before he was born (between the 2nd, longer test being delayed and getting the test results from same), I took the longer test and passed just fine.

Drinking fruit juice or even eating a lot if fruit the day before can throw off your sugar levels. My sister-in-law failed her first glucose test. She had been extra careful the day before to avoid sugar, but the morning of her test she was running late and grabbed a muffin to eat. Her numbers were just over the cutoff too. She had to do the second test and her numbers that time were a lot lower. She's sure it was the muffin. Don't eat any Oreos the day before and also really watch that you aren't eating a lot of bread/baked goods or fruit. Most people I know who failed the first test endured the second test and passed it just fine.

With my second pregnancy I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. The 3 hour test sucked. I felt ok for the first hour then felt like I was going to throw up for the next two hours. I was not sick during my pregnancy but the test made me sick

I failed the first and had better numbers on the second. It sucks only because it is long and boring. Bring something to do while waiting for three hours.

I failed too and had to go back for the 3 hour one. I learned that if you lay off the sugar for 7 days prior to the test and eat a protein filled breakfast the morning of the test (eggs) your blood sugar levels are a lot more accurate. I passed with flying colors when I did that. Good Luck!

I failed the first, but passed the second one with no problem. The 2nd time was much harder - I think it is 4 seperate blood draws total.

I failed my first glucose test last year about this time with only two points above the maximum score allowed. I passed the second one and was very relieved!

With my second child I failed the glucose test and had to retake. I passed the retake and no issues or extra treatments. Don't be worried about a little difference in number but take the second test to be safe. The second procedure isn't horrible, just time consuming. I had to go to the lab drink the stuff and sit for a few hours before the blood draw. Although it was nice in that I took a book and read since my first child wasn't with me...I wouldn't recomend that time at the lab with an active child.
Continue your healthy eating. I think treats are allowed too.

the 3 hour glucose test is where you have to be fasting and you go in for 3 hours. you have to drink a cup full of nasty sickly sweet sugary stuff and they draw your blood at 1 hour 2 hours and 3 hours......i had no issue with the blood drawing. but i had all day sickness throughout my entire 2nd pregnancy. so when i went to do the 3 hour and had to drink that stuff on an empty stomach it made me so sick to my stomach i had to lay in an exam room the whole time. the nurses kept coming to check on me. with my first pregnancy i had no issues with gestational diabetes but my second pregnancy with the twins i did. good luck!

I failed the 1 hour test with my last two pregnancies. The 1 hour test is a screening. Had to go on to do the 3 hour and passed it...both times. (I'm currently pregnant and did the 3 hour just last week.) My doctor gave me a list of items, complex carbs, I believe they were, to add to my regular existing diet for 3 days before the 3 hour test, and I fasted for 12 hours before the test. I think that for accuracy, you should stick to how you've been eating and only add in the extra carbs if your doctor tells you to. The three hour test isn't so bad, and the 3 hours went by so quickly. The worst part for me was the drink. My vision became blurry for about an hour during the 3 hours, only due to the HIGH amount of sugar in that terrible drink. They drew blood 4 times...once when you arrive and then once each hour following. Good luck, L.

Yes, it was 15 years ago, but I failed the first test and passed the second. It was my first pregnancy and I was unfamiliar with the whole testing procedure. I had treats at a birthday party at work right before I went in for the initial testing.

I have three children. When I was pregnant with two of them I failed my first test. With my first child I passed the three hour test. With my third child I did not. My levels were borderline. I did have to check my blood, meet with a dietitian and watch what I was eating. It wasn't bad at all.my dr assured me that my craving for peanut butter cups did not cause the diabetes, but was on the no list for the rest of the pregnancy. I was also told not to eat past midnight, so I scheduled the earliest appointment possible. I got shaky from all the sugar and no food, so I was glad I packed a granola bar in my purse for when it was over. Good luck!

I failed the first test, and passed the longer one. When I was pregnant the second time, I made sure I didn't eat breakfast first and passed the first test.

I failed my first by a few points and passed my second. Hopefully it's the same for you! Could be the cookies if you had many in the day before the test -- although I don't know enough about it to really say for sure! I do know that if I'm ever pregnant again, I will be pretty careful about what I eat around the time of the testing! (I think I ate my meal too close to the first test time, and I know they say to avoid really carb-heavy meals even though you're otherwise supposed to "eat regularly," what ever that means for a pregnant lady!)
