Excessive Thirst - Lewisville,TX

My daughter is 2 1/2 and we have tried several times to potty train her. We would put panties or pullups on her and she would pee in them in a matter of minutes. I personally didnt think it was a control thing but my hubby did. Well, now I am thinking that maybe she is drinking too much during the day and that she cant help but to pee in her panties. If we let her run about without a diaper she is asking to go to the potty every 10 minutes or so and there is always pee in the potty. On most days she drinks 50-60 ounces of watered down juice, milk, and water. We dont give her soda. She eats like a toddler, somedays she eats a lot others not so much, but she eats all different kinds of fruits and peas, and takes a vitamin every day-so other than her drinking and peeing a lot, she doesnt have any other issues. So, I guess what I am asking is this a lot for a toddler to be drinking? How much does she need to be drinking and when she wants to drink water, how do I say no to that? How will I ever potty train her if she pees every ten minutes?

What can I do next?

My four girls all drink about that much everyday! They range in age from 7 to 2 and I'm currently potty training my 2 year old. We went through the same thing with all of them and my Doctor told me that they need to train their bladders to hold it. Not so long that's it's unhealthy but they need to train their bodys so they can wait longer periods of time between potty breaks! Two and 1/2 years of just going potty whenever they want is a big change! Give her time! My advice though is to take away the pull ups & diapers! get her a step stool to the potty so she ca go herself when she needs to at home and when you're out take her every ten minutes if you have to until she learns to hold it longer. Bring two or three outfits with you everywhere you go. I promise it will pay off.

All four of my girls were potty trained at different ages even though I started each one at the same time. My first and last ones seem to be the hardest!

Hope this helps! Email me if you have any questions.

The first thing that popped into my head when I read the headline was diabetes I would get her checked out and really lay off the juice or heavily dilute it until you know for sure.

Yes, diabetes is always an issue to be checked; but she's old enough to set her down to drink when she has meals. Don't let her carry a drink around with her. See that she is sitting for snacks, also. When she is into a regular routine and drinking 6/8 ounces at meal times, twice a day for snacks, and at bedtime, she'll be more regular about her need to potty. Also, when she is trained and understands about going potty...you can gradually encourage her to wait a bit longer, if you are out with her. This will help to stretch her bladder so that it will hold more between potty times. Takes time, but it works.

It seems like a lot to drink compared to mine, but kids are all so different that it's hard to know for sure. I'd ask your pediatrician about it because there are some medical conditions that cause thirst or high urine output (type 1 diabetes is one). I'd lay off the potty training until you've asked the doctor about this. However, drinking a lot so she has to pee often is one of the suggested ways to potty train, so if everything is normal, this isn't a bad thing. Also, if she's going very often, it might be because she isn't relaxing enough to completely empty her bladder. Kids get so focused on the excitement of going on the potty -- toilet paper, flushing, mommy's attention, etc. -- that it's hard to focus on the task at hand. It may very well take several trips to finish!

The only conern I would have about excesive thirst is that this can be a preliminary sign of diabetes. Just to be on the safe side you should check with your pediatrician or nurse practitoner. However, it could just be nothing. I am always one to take the side of caution. I hope this helps.

As a Type 1 (Juvenile onset...got it when I was 11) Diabetic, my first thought was diabetes as well. You don't have to wait to get a regular appointment with your pedi, you can go to the local primacare or care now. Earlier was mentioned something about laying off the juice until going to the doctor...I'd have to say that if you are concerned, you probably should see your doctor or an urgent care center soon (like within a day or two). Diabetes is not critical in the first few days of diagnosis, but it can grow to be without you knowing. If that is the case, please reply back to me...I have a lot of great resources.
