Can someone tell me a book or website or just any advice on how to start potty traiing?? My dd just turned 2 and I think she may be ready to start. She knows what the potty is and she will sit on it and then wipe but she won't actually potty in it! How do I get her to understand that? Should I let her pick out some panties now or pull ups? I am just lost on where to start!!??

What can I do next?

I'll tell you what I did with my 2 kids and 3years of potty training 2 yr olds at work. About 2 I put them on the potty and took them every 30- 1 hour until they actually peed in the potty just for them to realize that's what their supposed to do then for the first 2 weeks I took them every hour and gradually moved up to 2-2.5hrs. Give lots of praise when they pee in the potty keep it positive. If shes ready it should only take max a month to get her potty trained. I didnt do pullups with my own kids just went from diapers to panties(after I got them to pee on the potty a couple days in a row)I still put them in diapers at nap and bed. hope this helps feel free to email

If she is really showing signs, skip the pull ups and go for panties. She will then feel the pee pee and that will help her learn what she is doing. Keep her on the potty for 10, 15 min at a time. If there is no potty, come back in 10 or 15 min until she goes. The you can go an hour of so. My daughter showed signs and this is what we did. I bought pull ups for when we had to run errands because they can be pulled up like panties so you don't have to lay her down like a baby. Also, if your daughter is successful get a potty chair for your car. Promise it is worth it. To help contain messes buy small trash bag and line the seat and then put a breast pad or small inexpensive pad into the seat. No sloshing pee and you just pick up the bag, tie a not and throw it away.
You are going to get a lot of advice on her telling you that children train themselves and she is too young. i don't believe it. My daughter was potty trained the week before her 2nd birthday. I really think the longer you wait to train your kiddo the more trouble you will have. Even if you daughter doesn't get it for a few day, stick to it. Don't go anywhere unless you have too for a few days and just potty, potty, potty. It is SO worth it to be out of diapers. I still have to help my daughter onto the potty and remind her throughout the day that she needs to go, but that is much easier then changing a diaper. Night time is going to be different. That may take a bit more time, but it will happen on it's own.
Good luck, and happy training.

K., check out this website on potty training, specifically the signs on potty training readiness.

http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/behavior/toilet...

There is a lot more too it than just knowing what the potty is and immitating you. If she meets most of the criteria there, then you are ready to start. However, if she doesnt and you start too soon you are looking at a large possibility of set backs along the way.

A good place to prepare a child for potty training is to get them their own potty, and some books specifically geared toward children about pottying. They even have books with flushing sounds wich delight most toddlers. Since summer is approaching put her potty chair in the room she spends the most amount of time in and let her run around without panties on. You'll have to clean up some puddles from time to time, but it will start her on the road to understand her bodies elimination process.

Good luck!

Don't plan on going anywhere for at least 3 days! Stay home, don't use pull-ups -they're great for on the go and once they've got the idea, but don't use them to start training, use panties and be prepared to change them A LOT. On a side note, I haven't used this technique, but I had a friend that let her child eat salty chips all day (this is the start day) (to make them thirsty) and then drink lots of juice to quench their thirst, that way she knew they'd be having to use the potty quite frequently so when she put them on they'd actually have to go. Good luck
