Excessive Hair

I am wondering if other women have gotten excessively hairy after giving birth? I had my daughter almost 4 years ago, and it seems to be getting worse. My fine hairs are turning dark, my "side burns" are darkening, and I have a sparce patch of long dark hairs on my neck. I am dark haired. My doctor doesn't seem to think anything is wrong with me hormonally. Does this just happen as we get older? I know my husband has gotten more hair on his chest... But I don't think I'm considered hairy enough to have hirutism.

What can I do next?

I think that comes with having children. I am 26 and have a 1 year old and after having her I have aquired a patch of hair back under my chin. I also have dark hair so am constantly trying to get rid of it. May even try hair removal. Good Luck!

I'm not sure if the hair growth gets worse, but I have the same problem. Talk to your Dermatologist about Vaniqa. It's a cream you apply to your face to inhibit hair growth.

Maybe consider going to your GYN and talking to them about PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome). I'm only 27 and have lots of unwanted hair including...upper lip, chest(only slightly) and a few dark ones under my chin...I feel like a man sometimes...
It could very well be a sign of PCOS, but if your regular doc doesn't think anything is wrong I'd seek another doctors insight.

I actually had the opposite, I lost masses of hair from my head after giving birth and my "baby" hairs are just finally grown back long enough to not stick straight up anymore! You could try bleaching or using nair where it's come in thicker or darker if you are bothered by it. I found nair to be pretty gentle on me when I tried it a time or two.

Jaimie....welcome to the wonderful world of AGING!!! :)
Just wait-- pretty soon you'll be plucking them from under your chin! This is a common complaint for women-- especially once they hit their mid-late 30's, unwanted body hair starts creeping up.
It's even more common for women with darker hair. Lighter heads can have this problem too-- but, lighter hair USUALLY though not always means LESS hair, and THINNER hair as well.
And naturally, the problem is worse for darker haired women because the unwanted hairs are DARK, so they are much more obvious.
It can also be a symptom of polycystic ovarion syndrome, or PCOS. Other symptoms are irregular menstrual cycle, cramping (even when you're not on your period) due to ovarian cysts, weight gain and inabilitiy to lose it, problems sleeping, etc.
If you're having those symptoms too, then you may want to talk with your OB. Other than that, it's probably just one of the symptoms of aging!
Aren't you THRILLED? :)

Happy plucking! :)

I think we do change after babies...My hair used to be straight and thin, after each baby, it got thicker, darker (used to be light brown, now is almost black) and is now curly. That is only the hair on my head though. I haven't noticed any on my arms or elsewhere. But every woman is different. I also didn't used to need to bleach my upper lip but I notice I do now.

Everyone who has mentioned the PCOS is exactly right. I deal with it/have dealt with it for many years. I hate having to wax/shave constantly and my husband playfully teases me about it, but I got used to it and just do everything I can to take care of it. For me, the PCOS was "cured" with weight loss and it's not as bad as it used to be. My sister has also dealt with it, and we both have had 2 kids and it did get easier. Have a great weekend and Happy Easter, God Bless!

Pregnancy can trigger all kinds of crazy hormone related things. Excessive hair can be a side effect of the hormones of pregnancy and can increase with other problems like PCOS and subsequent pregnancies. It's mainly a low estrogen problem.
