I have a daighter that is 3 yrs., 4 mos. old and she hates to go to sleep at night. Its this ongoing battle that keeps getting worse. So, last night I tried Hyland's Calm Forte for kids. I just wanted to know if anyone else has tried it and what was the outcome. Its seems to soon for me to tell if it worked but one thing did change - she did not wake up every few hours like she normally does. So, that was an improvement. She was a little calmer but I dont know if I should start giving it to her earlier or what. Please let me know your experience with this herbal remedy. Thanks!

J., I haven't used Hylands for sleep, but definately for teething so in general I find the brand great. What's in the formulation? Does it include lavendar as this is what I use as a sleep aid for myself and my 2 year old. I use an organic lavendar essesntial oil and I sprinkle it on my pillow, hers, whomever has a restless day and needs sleep. My boss also said she uses this for her daughter too, much older for her restlessness too. Hope that helps.

MyDD, who is 7, was having a ton of trouble this year in first grade. Her teacher and I didn't see eye to eye and I think she was hearing me discuss it and having a hard time going to school. Anyway she was to the doctor's mulitple times for tummy aches and it really seemed anxiety related. Her doctor thought we should try the Valamium Super Calm. We tried it a couple of times, but not enough to see if it really helped, she just seemed to turn around with us talking to her and her teacher. Sorry, not much help!

While homeopathy can be affective..my first ?? is what is your daughters shcedule at night? Is it consistent? Do your havea routine that begins ATLEAST an hour before her bedtime? This will make her mind and body begin the calm down proccess as known routine. With our four year old we..have dinner..some play time..a nice wam bath with lavender lotion...reading time with calm music on..kisses goodnight. Somtimes if she is particularly wound up from the day we do the routine but leave nice music on for her to listen to and unwind her mind. I would suggest going this route if before turning to any medication.
Also is she getting enough ways to expell her normal 3 year nuclear energy? Kids need outlets. Maybe she is not getting enough activity. That will just result in stored up energy that HAS to come out sooner or later...so nightime will be difficult. Give her run around playtime after school etc..this may help as well. Her body will be tired and along with a routine her mind will be ready too.

Good luck. I know bedtime can be frustrating..

I have never tried this but am interested to see what your results are. However, what I fed my daughter and keeping her on a routine helps get her to bed. Whenever I lose control of our routine her sleep changes so I have to keep things in order. Not sure if this is your case but if it is try it.

my mom was giving me melatonin at 12 instead of the "hardcore" sleep meds that left me feeling like i was hit by a bus.

I'm writing as a type of warning- just because its homeopathic doesnt mean she cant get hooked. my sister is a biochemist and she was the one that told me the FDA doesnt regulate what is put in any herbal suplement.

It took me 4 years to get back to a place where i can fall asleep without any medication.

try a lavander lotion and bath oil. this is calming and non-habit forming.

If i totaly mistook what you were asking I am very sorry my mom had the take a pill make it all better mentality that made it easier for me to develop an addiction to pain pills-so i try to warn others that the "pill make it better" idea can really backfire.

i hope you can find a way to help her sleep,
K.

I have never tried a homeopathic sleep remedy for my kids, but have used them for myself, and find it useful. I am interested to hear how it works out for you, as my 20 month old stopped sleeping though the night about four months ago, and we are tired. She was sleeping through from about 7weeks, now she is teething and only sleeps through if I give her tylenol at bedtime. I would rather loose sleep myself than give her tylenol every night for months. I would love to know if this works for your little one.

Dear J.,
I am a former pharmaceutical rep and beleive that herbal remedies can be dangerous. They are infact chemicals found in nature and can have a toxic effect. They are not studied or passed through the FDA. I asked my doctor about hylands when it was recommended to me -and she was not aware of them. Although they probably will not cause any harm- much is still unknown.
I am surprised by everyones response to your letter. I am a little horrified that everyone is so quick to medicate their child. This is extremely risky and does not solve the underlying problem. Perhaps you child is reliant on a pacifier, bottle, rocking, your presence to fall asleep and your need to help her overcome this. Also make sure that there is no medical reasons - such as sleep apnea etc. There are seveal sleep books on the market. Many parents have a difficult time with sleep training. I don't think drugs (even the ones found in nature) should be the answer. They can lead to addiction, overdose, side effects and so on.
Good luck,
Chris

Hi J.,

Hylands is safe and a good choice. I a have a son that has been taking 1mg of melatonin....it is sublingual so it disolves in his mouth. He was about 8 when I started him on it. So double check with your Dr or do your own research.
I give him it 1 hour before bed and it takes the edge off of that restlessness that he always had, he gets so comfortable in bed and goes right to sleep. Sometimes on the weekend I forget and he can easly stay up until midnight.

Melatonin is a natural occuring hormone in your body...babies have alot but the elderly don't....

I believe my son my just not have that much....

My brand is Source Natural...1mg...either pepermint or orange.

hope this helps! C.

Homeopathic and herbal are actually quite different things.

Homeopathic remedies are plants or minerals that have been extensively diluted. In fact, a chemical analysis of the remedy may not find even a trace amount of the original plant or mineral. No one has been able to prove scientifically how or why it works. The going medical theory is that it is simply a placebo effect (tell that to my infant daughter, or to the animals treated by homeopathic vets). My personal opinion is that it does indeed work, and I don't need someone to prove to me why I'm sleeping for me to be able to sleep.

Because of the dilution, homeopathic remedies are very safe to try on children. I also have never heard that they are addictive. I've used Calms Forte myself on my kids, although only when they were very excited and I needed them to sleep, like before we caught a 6:00am plane. I use it myself for weeks at a time when I"m going through a stressful period and can't sleep.

I think there's nothing wrong with using Calms Forte for a short period to help break a cycle and get everyone well rested, but I agree with other Moms that you need to try to find the cause of the problem.
Good luck!
