I just saw a story on TV about women who volunteer/babysit in battered womens' shelters, and it seems like a good idea. I also have lots of books & toys to give to such a place. Has anyone ever done this and have advice/stories to share?

What can I do next?

I happen to be a social worker and have worked with DV victims in the past. There are several DV shelters in Indianapolis: Coburn Place (less of a crisis shelter and more of a transitional living progam); The Julian Center (at about 21st and Meridian-Large crisis Shelter and couseling center); Salvation Army Ruth Lilly Center; and other smaller shelters that can be reached by calling Connect-to-Help at 926-HELP (4357). I encourage you to donate time and or items- all of these shelters could use any resources that good citizens are willing to give.

I live on the Westside and there is one called Sheltering Wings. I haven't done any work with them or anything like that, but I know a lot of people around me have. I think if you look in Hendricks County on the internet you should be able to find some info.

T.,

If you find out anything, please let me know. As a Christmas gift to my boss I want to volunteer my time for a good cause. I am not sure of where to start, and a battered women's shelter sounds like it would be a great place.

Thanks,
B. D.
