Before mexico I'd look at the local dental school.
I don't think I'd go to mexico for anything but a vacation.
I was wondering if anyone has ever gone to Mexico for their dental work? Was it a dramatic difference in price? Would you do it again? TIA
ETA: We'd be crossing in Mexicali, so any dentists in Mexicali you'd recommend that you can walk to from border?
Yes I have been to Mexico, I know borders are not nice (poverty can be overwhelming) and can be dangerous. I live where there is a lot of hispanics and seems most of them cross the border for dental work, so it doesn't seem that odd..I am not working right now and my husband is not a rich man, so we cant squeeze blood from a turnip. If I had 6K to spend on dental work, or shoot even a credit card to rack up those charges on, I would most certainly do it. My husband has chewed tobacco for years and he used to drink a lot of soda, so his teeth are bad, hence the need for lots of work. We have already spent 2K and his total treatment plan was 3K last year and this year its 6K, so I'm a little worried how we can afford all of this...

Have you said that out loud to your self? "Going to Mexico for dental work." A place without serialization procedures, malpractice insurance, health agencies overseeing complaints and mistakes, equipment certifications, assistant certifications, licenses, etc. You know a person can act as a dentist there, without even having gone to dental school?? Do a quick google search. Read all the nightmare stories of things gone wrong. People HAVE actually died from infections after getting dental work there.
Such a bad, bad idea.
My daughter did about a month ago, to Mexicali. She had an abscess and was on antibiotics she got here in OC, was given antibiotics there after the work (which turned out to be nothing and were useless) and about a day after she had the work done began experiencing much more severe pain. She is a drama queen with pain so I wasn't sure what was up, but after a couple of days she had to go to the ER, and had a massive infection. The doctor said the work appeared to have been done properly, but that maybe the instruments were not clean. So, she got back on antibiotics and Rx painkillers and is fine now. The cost was less but in light of the extra costs it all evened out to what she would have paid here anyway, and she plans to have the rest of the work she needs done here.
Doesn't sound worth it to me.
my girlfriend lives in san diego and went to a dentist in tijuana about 8 years ago and he said that she needed fillings on 6 teeth as she had cavities. She sought a second opinion in the states and they told her that she ahd no cavities. I would not trust anything down there. There are no checks and balances. Just free wheeling.
I think if you go to Mexico you may end up racking up more medical bills to fix the problems the cause, in addition to the dental work. I'd not take that option at all costs.
If you don't have dental insurance, you need to start calling dentists and doing your research. You need to understand exactly what your husband needs done and call dentists to discuss how much they charge for that work. You can then pick the dentist that offers the best price. The dentist needs to understand that you need to discuss costs before any work is done. Before he has the dental work done, you need to discuss and agree to a payment plan. Even if it's a small bi-weekly or monthly payment, a dentist will often agree to that.
Good luck.
So ya hate your husband, good to know.
It is all a matter of luck, considering you are talking about root canals and crowns you would be mad to risk it.
I never have, but I've heard nothing but nightmares from people who have. You risk an awful lot and it's luck of the draw... usually bad luck. You either end up with some serious infections or poorly done work or both and you end up having to spend a lot more in order to get back to health.
The risks aren't worth it. Why in the world would you chance something like that? What was wrong with the advice you received yesterday?
Good lord no and you couldn't pay me to do it.
No regulations, you don't know if someone is qualified it not, and the list goes on.
Not worth risking my life.
Good luck if you choose to go into the unknown to save a few bucks.
Haven't done it myself, but here's a link for Los Angeles
My dad, his wife and 2 kids age 8 now have always gone. His wife is from Mexico. THe price is much better and the kids even got put to sleep one time for teeth pulled, root canal and cavities/caps. YEa i think they should just start brushing their teeth but none of my bussiness.
My grandparents did before they passed away. They went yearly. They loved it! My husband has a friend who just went to have some major work done. He said the facility was nicer and more up to date than most American dental offices. The DDS was American. It was considerably cheaper even with the travel expenses. We live in the Dallas area in Texas, but I would imagine it would be the same on the Cali border.
