Even His Freshly Shaven Face Leaves a Painful Rash

My sweet, kind and wonderful new boyfriend shaves daily for work, sometimes twice daily. We have found that any snuggling or kissing makes me recoil with in seconds. His "stubble" (even minutes after shaving) feels like razor blades on my sensitive skin. I'm left with stinging, painful rashes all over my cheeks and chin that look like a sunburned rash of tiny dots. The stinging will calm a bit but last for the next 12-24 hours.

I did a spot test of all the products he uses on my own face to see if I'm allergic to any of them, nothing. I think it IS his coarse hair.

Do any others with senitive skin have this problem? What can be done? He feels awful he is hurting me and this is making us sad in a time when our budding relationship should still be all bells and whistles!

I would appreciate any serious solutions.

Hi K.,

We had this same 'issue' with my boyfriend as well. He hates straight razors, so he uses an electric shaver, EVERY DAY. He's going bald so he shaves his head completely, as well as his face as he was not allowed to have ANY facial hair at work.

Believe it or not, his mom told him to start using his electric shaver with Baby Powder. The Baby Powder acts as a lubricant for the razor, instead of having to use that oil gel stuff, and it has helped him get a WAY CLOSER shave, which makes it last longer as well as less prickly.

It has done wonders for us, and not about once a month I spend $1 at Walmart and pick up a bottle of powder. Cheap, easy solution! It just might work for you too.

my husband has a rough beard too. This worked for us.
He uses Jack Black having gel sold in nordstrom.
He uses gillette triple blade razors. His face comes out soft like baby skin.
Good Luck,

Hi K.,
Ask him if he would consider changing the way he shaves. If he uses a razor, ask if he would try an electric shaver, or the other way around. Changing the quipment should make a difference in getting a closer shave, if he is willing.

Another thing I have noticed, the more often you shave, the coarser the hair becomes; if you go without shaving for a couple days/weeks, hair will become less coarse.
I shave my legs once a week. When I do it tiwce or more, the hair gets coarser and stubble comes harder and sooner, then thins out again if I wait longer to shave - its easier in winter!

My boyfriend shaves his head and face with a wahl shaver, and it doesn't get very close, but he refuses to use a razor. If he shaves once a week, the stubble is not so bad and easy to cut, but if he shaves during the week then again on the weekend, it is much harder/thicker to cut for about 3 weeks.

Ask him if he would be willing to try it for a couple days, if not during the week (for job?), maybe on a weekend? Maybe a couple weekends in a row. And cut out the 2nd shave of the day.
good luck

Try some type of cream / makeup on your face to provide a barrier.
Maybe some preventive measures on your skin might just work and allow you both to further explore your relationship!

If the stubble is the real problem, maybe your boyfriend can try different shaving methods. I normally use a 2 or 3 blade razor, then go over my face again with an electric shaver. Electric shavers alone do not cut close enough, no matter what the advertising may claim.
Also, I have sensitive, oily skin that is very acidic. If I sweat a lot, I can "bleach" any colored shirts that I wear. Maybe this could be the problem, & you are having a reaction to his natural skin oils. I wash my face before I have any cuddle "face time" contact with my wife.

The more a person shaves, the more they have to. The hair does become coarse because of shaving so much.

See if he will cut down on shaving.

K.,
You are most definitely not alone on this one. My hubby is one heck of a hairy guy- and he "breaks" the rules of shaving by going against the lay of the hair (most guys do not) in order to get a good enough shave that he will not get yelled at for his appearance at work (He is Army). The poor guy has a 5 o'clock shadow by 12 noon even so! It is by that evening that I have to watch out for the stubble and if he does not shave for a day or so he can forget any make out sessions with me because I get the same reaction as you and my skin STILL has acne issues so I then proceed to break out horribly in those places that got rubbed raw. There is pretty much nothing you can do, minus seeing if he will look at shaving the "wrong" way. Oh- does he use electric razor? My hubby finds he cannot ever use those as they do not give a close enough shave for Army standards on him face.
You are right- It is his hair more than likely. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Hopefully something I wrote might help.
Best of luck.
J.

How about having him grow a beard - I bet longer hair will be soft and won't give you a reaction.

Has he tried any moisturizer or conditioner to try to soften the hair?

Hair doesn't come in more coarse the more you shave, the tip of the hair is blunted when shaving, and that makes is seem "more coarse". The amount and texture of the hair is determined by genes...shaving doesn't change that-just the end of each hair when cut by the razor...

My dear husband has agreed to keep a long goatee so don't get irritated skin. Don't know if that would work for you guys. Just thought I'd share.

My husband was that way. He used to use a razor until I bought him an electric shaver. It made a huge difference.

Hi K.,

My husband also has very coarse hair and it grows very quickly. We have three children and they will not cuddle with him unless he has shaved his face! He found that if he wet shaves and then goes over his face with his electric shaver it works very well. He also uses Nivea shaving foam and aftershave - I think it is called Sensitive.

Hope this is helpful!

I know it is a bit old fashion but a straight razor gives the best and closest shave. No stubbles at all. Otherwise try the new gillette power razor. My husband has a very heavy beard also. Good luck.

THIS MAY NOT BE A "SOLUTION," BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. (Sorry about the CAPs--not intentional!) Most of the time my husband's stubble does not bother me, but it is really the very early stubble that is the worst. Because it is so short, it feels more like sandpaper. When his whiskers are longer, they become softer. He grows a beard every winter (which he does trim), and that never bothers me. The hair is much softer. Not everyone likes a beard nor do all jobs allow one. My skin is not overly sensitive, but again it is sometimes. Have you ever been to a dermatologist for your sensitivity? I'm not sure that there are any products that might make your skin more "resilient," but it might be worth a shot. They might also have some other information for you on making things work. Good luck!
