I'm 5'1", and I found that the Moby wrap was WAY too big for me. I felt like I was wrapped in a cocoon, and I felt and looked fat because of all that fabric wrapped around my middle. I'd go with the Ergo, definitely!
which of these is better? i like the beco due to the fact it is locally made..where the ergo is made in china. but the ergo seems to be enjoyed by more...ultimately which is better?
I got the ergo and love it. thanks to all.

I have used both happily. I find The ergo works best for older babies--5 months through 3 or 4 years. I found the Moby easily maxes out at a year--maybe even earlier.

I have both the Ergo Baby carrier and the moby wrap. My baby is also a preemie and she's just over 12 pounds now. I love using the Ergo Baby for walks and shopping because most the weight is distributed around my hips instead of my back and shoulders. My baby does NOT enjoy being in this carrier when I sit down, only when I'm upright. It's really easy to get her in and out of the Ergo carrier, even when she's asleep. You'll need the infant adapter cushion until your baby is about 15 pounds. The carrier is so flexible because you can use it as a front carrier, backpack and hip carrier well through the toddler years. Worth every penny!
The moby wrap is great for getting her to sleep when she's overly tired or fussy. In the "craddle hold" position, I can sit down with her in the wrap and she'll sleep for an hour or so. It gets very hot and I hated this sling during the summer. Wear a tank or a light t-shirt or go naked. It's great for working on the computer and doing some housework. However, it's impossible to quickly remove her from the wrap and she always ends up crying. The moby is not as comfortable as the ergo, because most of the weight is across your shoulders and the tie around the waist can be constricting. I've also tried to use it with her facing out, which is ok, but she's able to get bumped more easily. I cannot use this wrap for long walks as it does not have the same support as the ergo. My baby also shifts around and sometimes ends up in my armpit. My moby wrap is a loaner from a friend, and I'm glad I didn't pay any money for it.
I've been unsuccessful using either wrap for nursing. It's so much easier to just sit down with her on my lap. Neither wrap can be used while you are cooking or doing any housework that you could accidentally bump the baby. I can't wait until she's big and old enough for me to use the ergo carrier as a back pack.
Ditch the stroller and use a carrier when you shop and walk. The baby stays much more calm and strangers are less likely to start touching your baby when the baby is in your personal space.
I have two young girls, my older one will be three in January and my younger one is almost 18 months. I am also pregnant with my third. I have a Moby wrap and used it with both girls until they were too heavy to carry that way. I really liked it when they were tiny and they liked it when they could face out and see everything. It never hurt my back or shoulders. The only complaint that I have is that it makes you very warm. i tend to be quite hot when I am nursing so I did sweat while wearing it. However, I have a few friends who would wear theirs all day and just pop the baby in and out. I hope this information helps.
dear E.,
what a gift you give your baby by carrying him. There are many carriers that would let you do a carry that is more appropriate for a preemie and easier on your back. I have a lot of information about baby wearing on my web site.

I love love love my Ergo. I have to carry my 30lb-er on the long walk to my older daughters preschool and its a piece of cake. If you are small too you will be able to use the hip carrier. I found that didnt fit my frame. but I carried her in front for many months and now I carry her all the time on my back. Its take some practice to get used to getting her on your back alone but I can do it with practice and it come with a video. Check out the web site where they talk about where and how the carrier is made and their relationship with the factory. its good stuff. good luck!
I got mine off craigslist for $60. Love it.
Hello,
I only have experience with the Ergo and the Baby Bjorn, and I like the Ergo MUCH better. I can even carry my 3.5 year old daughter in it hiking in the mountains, and my back does not hurt afterwards!
I never used the moby wrap, but am considering it for baby #2 because everyone I know who uses it for their little one loves it. But I do LOVE my ergo. It's very comfortable (and I do have chronic back pain) and easy to put on. I've even used it with my 3 year old on hikes (over 35 pounds). Could not imagine life withhout it!
I have never used a moby wrap, but I have an ergo and would never use anything else! I wore my daughter on the front until just a month or so ago (she's now 9 months) and now we wear her our backs because you can flip the carrier around. For a lot of dads, it's even more comfortable wearing the babies on their hip and ergo can readjust to be worn that way. It can come with an infant insert if your baby isn't big enough to stick his legs through the sides (it's a bit wider than a bjorn), so he can just snuggle down into it. Ergo is great because it feels like you're wearing a backpack and transfers any of his weight to your hips.
Good luck!
I received an Ergobaby for Christmas after seeing a woman in the mall with one. I love it. I have a bad lower back, due to an injury and the bjorn just killed my back!! The ergobaby has more support in the lower back and very easy to use and get baby into.
Worth the $92.

well, I found that after a few months for me personally the moby was hard to use, WE LOVE our Ergo. My husband especially loves the Ergo, but with a small frame the one problem i have with it would probably be a non issue since it sometimes crushes my breasts when I hcarry her on my back. We have found it to be especially perfect for nap time on teh go or when things need to get done around the house and there is no time to sit and rock teh baby for a long time.
I have used both. The Moby worked best with my son from birth to about 6 months, when all he really wanted to do was snuggle. Once he got active and more interested in everything else in the world, the Ergo has been a godsend. I weigh barely over 100lbs. and my son is 14 months and 23lbs. I can go hiking with him in the Ergo. My best advice is to take the baby with you to the store and try both of them on and see what the two of you like best.
Hard choice. I like both. I love, love, love the Moby Wrap and used it with my daughter until she was about 15-16 months. My husband preferred the Ergo Carrier because it was more "manly". The Ergo Carrier is very comfortable, but I got used to the Moby first. It's really up to you. You can't go wrong with either.
I used both the Moby and the Beco (very similar to the Ergo). I used the Moby when he was younger, until about 6 months, and now I use the Beco.
I loved the Moby because he could cuddle up close and there were multiple positions. When he got bigger and more wiggly I had to switch though.
The Beco is great, you can carry them front, hip, and back. Much more comfortable than the Bjorn!
I'd recommend trying them both out, and you may want to try a sling too. See which one you prefer, or get both!
I'd recommend the ergo. The moby is nice when they're little, but can sometimes be a challenge to wrap properly. The ergo distributes the wait of your child over your hips instead of your shoulders, which can really save your back.
I use a Moby wrap. I am small also (5'2" about 110 pounds). I've used the Moby wrap since my son was born. I've just started using it to carry him on my back and it is so comfortable! If you feel there is too much fabric, just cut off the excess and resew it. I can't tell you which is better regarding the ergo carrier vs beco. I'm only answering your original question - you may disregard this entirely if need be. Good luck in your search!
Hi! How old is your baby now??? I've read a few things about preemies and one of the things that has stuck with me is they grow faster when they have a lot of skin to skin contact. I'm not familiar with the beco but it sounds like it may be like the didymos wrap. Try using the beco without a top on, put your baby in it then wear a shirt over them so your baby has skin to skin contact while being carried. Have baby in most of the time in this way. Ask your husband to do the same. They supposedly thrive this way. If you can get a hold of the video done by James McKenna on benefits of nursing/co-sleeping he talks about preemies. Try a lactation consultant in your area. Also, if you would like to learn more about other types of carriers go to Mothering.com. One of my best friends is a chiropractor and he believes the bjorn is harmful to the babies hip development whereas the ergo is ergonomically better for baby's hip. My son loved the ergo. There are so many carriers now--- check out Mothering.com for all the different varieties.
Hi there, I have both and i love them both too. I like the Ergo a little better b/c it has pockets to help carrier things (ie car keys etc...). It's really easy to use too. I've gotten really fast at putting my 7month old girl in it. She can't look outward and I think that's the only negative thing to it... The Moby wrap is very cool & comfortable too. Babies can face inward and out. The drawback to this one is a) no pockets and b) it takes awhile to get all "assembled". The fabric is really long and can be cumbersome... Hope this helps! opps! I don' thave the beco... but i have the moby.
we used both and also a hot sling and loved all of them equally for different reasons. the moby can be a pain to put on and isn't going to be as comfortable in hot weather (it's almost like wearing another layer) but it is a super wrap for creating that cocoon-like feel for a baby. i used to wear it and wash dishes with the baby snoozing away inside. my husband wore it all the time as well. the ergo was a good choice for when the baby got a little older - i used to wear it in the side saddle position a lot or in the backpack mode if we were going for a longer walk. the only thing was that my husband couldn't wear it because the size wasn't really adjustable. the hot sling was great for quicker trips i.e. no need for wrapping, buckles, etc. if you can, i'd say, get all three!
I have used the moby and a beco (which is more comfortable for me - I'm 5' 1" - than the ergo, but the same idea) and once the baby gets bigger, the beco is a lot more comfortable. I used the moby with my first son until he was about 6 - 7 months, but with my second only until he was 3 months old, but he is heavier than my first. The problem with the moby is that the stretchy fabric makes it hard to carry a heavier baby. I also find it very hard to use it on my back. I have been carrying my baby on my back on my beco since he was about 2 months old and he loves it. I can have him in there for 3-4 hours if I have to and he is perfectly happy. You can also use it in front facing you. When my baby was very little (maybe until 12 lbs), I would carry him facing out with his legs crossed in the beco.
Before buying an ergo, find a place where you can try an ergo, beco and pikkolo (and there are others out there) if possible. Although they are basically the same, some people find one or another more comfortable.
You can find the beco in theportablebaby.com (she is great and will help you a lot) and the ergo in tiny tots in Campbell.
I have the slingsling wrap, its really cute and cool looking, however the heavier your baby gets the more your back will hurt, but I heard the moby wrap is awesome, I went to visit my aunt the other day and tried her moby wrap with my 5 mth old baby...it was soooooo comfortable, you can even nurse while walking without showing a thing, and i'm totally not overexaggerating. it felt so good on my back too, a lot of great back support, i'll be getting one soon :) And they're super affordable, 30 bucks that's cheap!
i LOVE my ergo. i like the fact that it can used as a front or back carrier. it's very comfortable. i still use it for my 18 month old. for awhile there, it was the only place she would nap. :) it's a little pricey (about $100 new) but worth every penny!
I made a comparison chart that you (and others) might find helpful:

Short answer: Beco (or Pikkolo)!
