I posted a question a few months ago regarding my son who gags/vomits after eating. He has taken all the necessary test to find out what the problem is, but everything is coming back normal. He is scheduled to have an endoscopy on Tuesday. After reading up on it, I am still very nervous. Has anyone else's child/self actually had an endoscopy before. Please enlighten me. Thanks moms.

I had one about 2 years ago- it was really not bad. The worst part is getting the IV. The rest I was completely unaware of, and woke up feeling fine (just groggy, of course- but not uncomfortable or in any pain)

This will give the doc a lot of important information, so try to focus on this being a big step in the docs knowing what to do to help your son :)

My daughter just had one on Monday! I was a nervous wreck too, but her lack of eating, constant nausea and weight loss (she's almost 12) made me very motivated to do whatever it takes to figure out exactly what is going on with her. Like you, I had already put her through all the other tests, and everything kept coming back normal.
The hardest part for me was watching her go under (none of my kids has ever had any kind of procedure like this.) It was done in twenty minutes and we were on our way home within two hours of arriving. She did great. And we now have a clearer picture of exactly what's going on inside her (literally! they gave us pictures to take home!)
I'm sure it will be fine, and I hope your doctor can start helping your son feel better soon :)

Hi. I had an endoscopy several years ago, when I was about 40. I was given a sedative via an IV and slept through the procedure. I woke up feeling just fine, like nothing had been done. I spent the rest of the day home, and took care of the kids, etc..., without any issues. My friend had one last month, and she had some slight discomfort in her throat for just a day or two. I think the anticipation of the procedure caused more anxiety than the procedure warranted. I totally understand that since it's your son, so the anxiety on your part is compounded. I would downplay the procedure with your son as much as possible, and if you have any questions, call his doctor's office to discuss them.

My daughter had one when she was maybe 7 or 8. We talked about what was going to happen ahead of time. I explained about the IV and although she was a little nervous, honestly, she was really good and they put it in with no problem. I think they use smaller needles for kids so it really didn't hurt her and she's not usually that brave. They let my husband and I stay in the room while they put her under (which I didn't like at all). My daughter had tubes put in/taken out a few years before this and she always skipped down the hall with the nurse before the procedures so I know she is comfortable with hospital staff. I just didn't like seeing her put under.

Anyway, the endoscopy was over in less than 5 minutes and my daughter was up and around in no time at all. Really, except for the IV, there's nothing to worry about. Don't know how old your child is, but try to explain everything ahead of time if you can.

You have had medical testing.
Just wondering, if they have considered conditions such as "Dysphagia"?
This is a condition with affects swallowing etc. It being a swallowing disorder.
You can look it up online.
It can affect eating as well as speech, for example.

Has your son always done this?
Or is it a sudden new occurrence?

I have had 2 and my son had one when he was around 12 months old. It is really not a big deal at all. He cried when he was waking up and vomitting a bit but that wasn't unusual at all. It led to a diagnosis and immediate major improvements in his case and was well worth it.

hi
my son had an endoscopy at 1.5 because he had bad reflux and threw up so often.. you can hold your child while they "fall asleep".. it is really quick, and then they wake your kiddo up and get a quick briefing on what the doctor saw... also they can send you home with pics just like with your pregnancy ultrasounds, except they are in color. ask for some if they dont, i got to bring home pics of my sons gastritis (red irritated stomach lining)... it isnt as scary as some other procedures. good luck!!
