I don't have good advice either but I've been through a similar situation. My middle girl last year was sent to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital to take tests for Lupus. I was scared to death. Crying all the time, nervous, couldn't eat. My middle child is a wonderful girl and was thinking, God, if you're going to take a child, don't let it be her! Almost giving Him permission to take one of my other two. I felt horrible about it. Turned out it wasn't lupus. This year same symptoms popped up and she was diagnosed with polymorphus light eruption - she is allergic to the sun! I was so relieved. Although she still has a skin disease it is not as serious as lupus. I hope it all turns out well with your son. Pray often. He listens.
