Hi - This concerns my 8 1.2 yo son who still wets at night. He still wears a pull-up so that, hopefully, some nights the sheets won't get soaked. I'm getting more agressive about waking him up around 12 or 1. He sleeps like a rock! 1 has proved too late, and 11 p.m. was too early tonight. He's frustrated, sad & losing confidence. Our ped. prescribed a pill that is only for short-term use (sleep-over, etc). I've also heard about the electronic 'prompters'. Anyone use those? I'm so tired of washing sheets, and seeing him sad, too. Thanks for your help !

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. You are so supportive and it helps to know others have been through this or just even care to say 'hang in there'! I do plan to try one of the alarms, also.

Both my kids had periods of dryness, and periods of wetness at night. My pediatrician told me not to even worry about it till they were ten. I just kept them in pull-ups every night, even on overnights, and tried not to worry about it. Sure enough, but ten, they both stopped having accidents.

Good morning,
My daughter in law has the same problem with my 12 year old grandson. She has taken him to the dr. and he has been on the pill to, no avail. He has wore pull ups and has had the little alarm that goes off when he gets wet. She has tried all you have tried and more. We have come to the conclusion it is a waiting game. Til he matures enough to quit. Kids today sleep very hard and that is a problem. I know it is very hard but you will have to be patient. My grandson has quit wetting since he turned 12.

My son is 9 years old and just recently stopped wetting the bed. He wore Good Nights before then. I explained to him in a loving but firm way that I would not be buying any more Good Night for him and that he would be responsible for washing any wet sheets. I also told him to try starting and stopping his stream of urine. I explained that strengthening those muscles would help him control his bed-wetting. I don't know what exactly worked, but it's been a month and he hasn't wet the bed since! Good luck, I know this can be hard.

Please tell your son that this will go away soon! Myself was a bed-wetter tell the 5th grade and yes I did grow out of it! And I have four sons and two of them were bed-wetters too and they to did not stop tell around the 5th grade! I no that you are tired of washing the sheets but that is what we do for are children. I would never give a pill to help stop it , as told by my ped. they would grow out of it and not do anything but to what.
My sons are now 20,19,15 and 14 and the two that were the bed-wetters are just fine!!

Hello A. i read your story and how it moves me as a member of parental invalvment we have meny people come and speck with us about diffrent situations and one of those would be exacly like what your son is going throu somtimes children wet the bed of no falt of there own have you took in him to the docter, because more than 75% of the time it has to do with a medical condision other times there system just isnt strong enough to hold it while his brain wakes him up. But if you want to try someother stuff befor going to the docter you can alweys have him stop drinking fluids at lest 1 hr befor bed.

I am sooooo glad someone asked about this. I have been meaning to ask but keep forgetting. My 9 1/2 year old is one of the ones that wets maybe once a week and he too is a HEAVY sleeper. I do try and make my self get up in the middle of the night usually around 2 or 3 am and wake him to go potty which he does but as you said he's a zombie sometimes he talking giberish but it does the trick. I think I will try one of those alarms as well and see if we can get him out of this predicament. I do have to day he is getting much better about his accidents it used to be almost every day and now we are down to once a week.
It really helps me to know that we are not alone in this and there are other people like us with the same issues.

THANK YOU TO ALL!!!!

poor little man! that sucks. Not sure how much soda he drinks but as a kid I drank the heck out of it. It caused me to have accidents...laugh too hard I would pee, I often would have emergency trips to the bathroom. I only know that it was the carbonated drinks when I cut them all out completly of my diet. Then about a year later I started having one a day...my bladder went winney on me again! As an adult. Even just one. Not sure if its the amount of sugar (even diet did it) like would juice be too much to handle also??? Good luck hope you find your answer.

I would take him to the Doctor. Every child is different
and every case is different. It sounds like you have had enough of this problem. I understand that is why I recommend you to take him to his Doctor.

Good luck,

Yes, I had a very similar problem and got a battery operated "buzzer" that responds to wetness and woke him up at the first sign of moisture. It worked. Unsure of the name of the company, but you can google "bedwetting device" and I'm sure it'll come up for you. Good luck! It DOES work so stay hopeful!

(I'm copying this from a previous response I submitted)

I finally called my Pediatrician when I was at wits' end and totally sleep-deprived. He recommended a company called the Potty Pager. Their website is www.pottypager.com. It is a silent, wireless device that looks like the standard pager. It vibrates the second any fluid hits it and in doing so, trains the child to wake up before they go. I don't know how it works but it does. My children both used one last summer (where we usually had 3-4 nights a week each that they would wake up wet). To date, we haven't had any wet nights since then.

Each pager is about $75 and you'll probably go through an extra set of batteries but it's worth it. We noticed a significant difference in three weeks - and it was amazing how the boys felt better about themselves as well.

Best of luck to you from someone who's been there....

Update: My one son is completely cured. The other one still wears the pager every night and is fine with wearing it. He accidents are infrequent nowadays and his attitude is much better.

Girl--I am SO there with you. My 9 year old has beenout of pullups for about a year, but still wets the bed about once a week. We try to wake him up about an hour after he goes to sleep and he goes, and that usually does the trick. He is such a zombie though--he really isn't awake and we have to practically hold him up to go. We got a buzzer for him about 1.5 years ago and that really helped. The WetStop3, I think. Almost $100.

My 7 year old--we can't even get him to wake up and get out of the bed. He is still in his pullup. We tried the buzzer on him, but he just slept right through it. So we have waited a bit. The buzzer cord isn't working well now, so we debate on getting a new one?

My 4 year old--pullups. Soooo frustrating b/c we HAVE tried with these kids. They are just super sound sleepers. SO ready to be over this.

I also have an 2nd grader still wetting the bed. This one of mine is the youngest and I'm convinced I have to be patient.

I try to compliment when the sheets stay dry, even if the pull-ups were used. I also try my hardest to not mention how tired I am of changing the bed sheets (not to mention the washing and washing). I think that is just so discouraging for him to hear.

You know, now that you mentioned it. I wonder if old wives' tale would work. I have heard that warts on your skin will go away when you wish them away. Children who had their grandmother did something (pretend to pinch it, I think) and tell the child that it will be gone soon actually had their wart disappear.

I might ask my mother to say a prayer, bless him, or whatever comes to mind to "send away" this annoyance (I don't think I will refer to it as a curse!).

Hang in there and good luck!

My son wet the bed until he was almost 15, it was very frustrating for him. We bought mattress covers and he wore pullups( for a while at least). He finally outgrew this at 15. My 12 year old wet the bed until 11 years old and wore pullups everynight. It never bothered her as much as my son. The doctor said they are both heavy sleepers and they don't wake up for the signal of a full bladder. Anyway, they both had to just outgrow it. Sorry your son is having to deal with this but it WILL get better.
Blessings,
D.
