So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for the advice.

I took Malcolm back to the doctor and I was giving a prescription for something a little stronger, so far it looks as if it is working.

My son who is 5 has the same issue. My Dr. advisede to use Aquaphor or OTC Cortizone. The Cortizone really helped with my son itching. His Eczema cleared up within a day or two.

Here is what works for my son... we lotion him up (Aveeno baby)as SOON as he gets out of the bath. He is still wet/damp while we do it. Make sure you slather him up and really rub it in. On his problem areas (like behind his knees and his chin) we use cortizone cream once a day to keep it under control. When he has a flare up we use prescription cortizone and it usually goes away in a day and then we go back to over the counter cortizone. I know its so hard to see them like that...itchy nad uncomfortable. I hope some of these ideas work for your little guy and hes more comfortable!

I know for a fact that Renew lotion works wonderfully for eczema. I use it myself everyday and I have excessive dry skin. I used to use Jergens for years thinking that was the best thing that worked on my hands. I was definately wrong b/c Renew by far is the best lotion. It actually repairs your hands. It's not oily at all! I can wash my hands 4 or 5 times a day before I decide to put some more lotion on. And that's mainly b/c I love the feel of it so much. I do purchase that along w/ other fantastic products through a company that I am enrolled w/. If you are interested, please let me know. My home phone # is ###-###-####. Oh, and my name is E. Stewart.

I have had eczama all my life and have tried sooo many products. A co-worker had me try this lotion, Renew, by one of those direct sales companies ( www.melaleuca.com ) The stuff worked magic and it is safe and not a steroid cream. You might want to look into finding a person who sells it and get a sample. It is not greasey and works so well. (I don't sell the stuff- just really do believe it helps) Good luck- I know your child's pain...

Hi B.,
My daughter has eczema too, on the insides of her elbows. I did some research and wanted to go natural, without prescriptions. I found the best thing ever. Emu oil...yes, the bird from australia. 100% pure emu oil, you can find it at a health food store or natural foods store. It is amazing. It has no smell and is safe for 2 year olds and up. I applied it to my daughter's inner elbows before school and again after her bath at night. In about 2-3 days it had cleared up. And, it was really bad, all scabbed from scratching it. I am releived to have found a simple cure. Be advised, it is expensive... we paid about 20 dollars for a small bottle of oil, but it lasts a long time. And, you dont need to use a lot. It is great. I have also learned that 100% pure virgin coconut oil may do the same. Google emu oil an coconut oil, and you'll see plenty of info. I hope it works for you. Good luck.

I've had this problem all my life. I remember when I was in nursery school, I had it on my thumb. I scratched so much it spread up to my elbow. I soaked my arm in a sink with phisoderm and water, if they still make that. I had a rx cream, but because I scratched the rx didn't stay on. The dr. told my parents to wrap my arm in saran wrap to keep the rx on! It worked. I've eliminated all products, creams, detergents, with fragrance. During allergy season it ws always worse. I went to a million dermatologists, the best one did not prescribe the name brand rx's, he rx'ed compound creams. And I when I had flare ups I would go for follow up visists. The dr. wud change the rx if nec. according to how my skin condition was doing. He was a miracle worker, i called him my physical therapist for my skin. He just retired, I told him I was going to retire with him! Good luck!

When my son was young, we'd use Aquaphor right after bathing. We also avoided soap. The dermatologist may have some other advice on products and if it's really severe, may be able to give you a prescription prouduct to treat with. Good luck!

Remember to keep his bathwater cool... hot water dries the skin! You may want to put cool towels on the broken skin and keep his nails cut short!

Hi B.. You need to keep him very mosturized with lotion such Aveeno or Eucerin as soon as he is done with his bath and during the day. Eucerin makes a lotion called calming itch which is safe for children. Switch your laundry detergent to ALL, and if it is terribly bad benadryl helps the itch. I do not agree with the previous response that healthy bodies do not get eczema. my girfriend is extreemly fit and her husband a personal trainer her son has eczema and believe me they eat so healthy. Make sure you keep the area cool b/c the warmth will enduce the itch. Hope this helps and your little one gets some relief.

Is it all over his body? If his localized, there are lots of over the counter remedies. I use hydrocotizone when my son gets a little patch. Its gone overnight. But it sounds like your son has it severely. I think you need to see a doctor and take his or her reccomendation.

Hey B., I am sorry your child is suffering so much with the itching. Ask the doctor or pharmacist to recommend a lotion or powder that will calm the itching. Also, maybe you could try good old fashioned calamine lotion. I hope your child feels better.

My Dr had me use aquaphor on my son's skin skin. It is an over the counter item. My son is 11 and still does this if I do not keep on top of those dry spots.

Wow! My son has it too, but not that bad. We use Mustela Stelatopia in the bath and the MD prescribed a cortisoze cream. I have heard of using a stronger prescription, it looks more like Vaseline butI don't recall the name. Good luck!

I know this is a little late but when scratching seems nonstop and you are waiting on the creams & medicines to kick in, ScratchMeNots have helped us tremendously. It keeps them from scarring and digging into their skin! I know how hard it is to watch the intense scratching.

Hi B.,
My son had really bad eczema too. Every night after a bath, I'd rub some Eucerin Plus Intense Repair body creme on him. It works really well, especially after the bath. My Dr. said that lotions are ok, but don't work as well as cremes and he was right. Good luck Malcolm! :o)
