Eating Problems with My 6 Month Old

I have been feeding baby food to my 6 month old son since he was 5 months. He was typically eating cereal for breakfast and dinner and a veggie for lunch with breastmilk in between feedings. Last weekend he was running a fever and was down for a few days. Monday he had a fever in the morning but was okay by afternoon. We had his 6 month check up that day and doc said it was okay to give shots since he was acting better. Also, told me to change up his eating by giving him cereal and fruit for breakfast, veggie and fruit for lunch, and veggie and cereal for dinner. So since Monday I have been trying this out and he just doesn't want to eat. He is still taking his milk good and on time but as for eating he only eats about 1/2 a jar of his veggies and then he usually really like his cereal but wouldn't take more then 2 bites this morning. He is feeling better and not running fever so I just don't understand what the deal is. (And if your thinking it's the fruit-I've tried bananna's and applesauce..) Please help!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm starting to believe it might be a tooth. He already got 2 bottom teeth a few weeks back and yesterday he spit up 3 times (he never spits up) and then during the night last night got a runny nose. I quit feeding him food Saturday morning and just nursed him the whole weekend. Finally Sunday night he acted like he was just starving to death so I fed him some veggies and he ate the whole jar and didn't fuss a bit...I guess we will see.

My second baby didn't start eating babyfood untill 8 months and then it was only a little on and off...she went to table foods by a year. She never really got into baby food. Now at 14 months she will take it in small amounts. She was in the 80 % at 9 months for weight.

I wouldn't rush it, or worry about fruit or no fruit, how
much,ect..

About your Doctor giving shots that day? I would question your Doc on this. Acting better doesn't mean his immune system wasn't still fighting something off ,and then they add 4-6 more things for him to fight off...not ok. There are medical reasons vaxcine producers warn against injecting children with fever...reasons Doctors should be more careful with.

My daughter is 6 months old and just last week she started screaming 1/2 way through her feeding. Come Friday evening, a tooth has officially surfaced! Now she's getting a runny nose, sneezing and spitting up more because of it. You may want to check your son's mouth and see if he may have a tooth poking through as well.

K.- Maybe this isn't it, but when my son was sick, he wouldn't eat for awhile afterwards either, even when he was feeling better. I think he connected food to feeling yucky. I just kept at it, and eventually he started eating again. I started with tiny portions first, and when he started eating those, I moved to bigger portions. Hopefully this helps you, good luck!

My daughter is 6 months old, too (and I have an older daughter who is 2 1/2), and my 6-month-old has started being kind of picky, too, lately. I'm thinking it is partially due to just the fact that she is getting older and having more of an opinion. She used to love the cereal, and I would usually give her cereal and a veggie/fruit at lunch, and the same at dinner, but lately all she wants is the veggie or fruit, and after every bite of cereal she kind of whines a little. So I have to switch between the two (I've tried mixing the two, but she doesn't like that). But anyway, I think some babies just start to develop preferences. I remember my oldest daughter went through times where she loved certain foods, and then didn't like them for a while, and then liked them again. I think you do just have to keep having them try the foods, and if they don't like it, try it again another day. My oldest hated broccoli forever, but I would give her a bite or two every so often, and now she loves it.

Also, on the amount, my understanding is that at this age, they should only be eating about half of a jar of each food. Especially if you're increasing from what you were giving him before, he is likely going to need some time to adjust to the increase in food.

Another possibility is that I know around 6 months they go through a growth spurt, and I've heard (and remember with my first) that sometimes after a growth spurt they have kind of a decrease in appetite for a few days. It could be that, too.

Or it could just be the lingering feelings from the sickness.

I guess the point is: there are a lot of things it could be, but I wouldn't worry too much...he'll eat if he's hungry, so just keep offering it, and so long as he's taking his milk, I've heard that is the most important thing at this age. Then if it continues for very long, you might call his doctor and see what he/she says.

Hope that helps.

My kids went through spells of eating food and not eating food. The baby is still taking milk so he is still getting what he needs. If he doesn't seem to like a veggie or fruit today try it again in a couple of weeks. Their change buds change constantly and solids are something new to him. I just went with the flow of my babies and non of them are over or under weight and are healthy.

I breastfed excusively for the first 6 months and only then did I add in cereal. I made home-made babyfood starting at 7 months. My kids were always on the 50% or above in height and weight. I also never gave juice before the 1st year.

What is your docotr's rush? I would tell him to back off. Keep in mind solids are NOT the main source of nutrients for the first year. They are there to experiment with and to supplement milk.
I say count your lucky stars, becasue they will eat those solids when they are ready!!

all the best, liz

I actually think it might be related to teething. My son did the very same thing at that age, and honeslty did not start eating well again until he cut his top 2 and bottom 2 teeth. I would not worry too much, as that is not their main source of nutrition, and really, I agree that we tend to rush the baby food thing anyway. I just checked every once in a while, and when I could see that his teeth were in, he was willing to eat again, but it took about a month. Good luck!! ~A.~
