My son is 7 months old. Lately my husband and I have been talking about what and how much our son should eat. We are both first time parents so we really dont know/ understand how much he should be getting. I know formula is where he gets most of his nuitrition but I always thought that at some point you should ween them off formula. He gets 4 bottles a day at 7 onces. We usually give him cereal and half a jar of fruit or veggies. But talking to other moms and their kids at that age were different. Public helath told us we should feed him cereal and jar food three times a day and four bottles but that seems like an awful amount of food. But im wondering if we should feed him less formula and more food or we are fine with what we are doing. And if we are right on track when do we start giving him more food and less formula. I really need some help!

What can I do next?

I was always told by my pediatrician that you give them their normal amount of formula (for me, it was nursing because I breastfeed... but it's the same rule...) as normal. Then you can wait about an hour, and offer a 'solid' food 3x a day. Let them eat as much as they want as far as that's concerned. My DD is turning 1 year old next week, and her feeding schedule (that we have been doing since she was roughly 6.5 months) is:

8:00-9:00am wakeup, nurse
10:00am Breakfast (usually fruit, or fruit and cereal)
12:00pm Nurse, nap
2:00pm(ish) wakeup, Lunch (usually veggies)
5:00pm Nurse
6:00pm Dinner (usually veggies with whatever we are having for dinner)
8:00pm Nurse, Bed
1:00am Nurse
~Rinse and repeat. :)

My pediatrician told us that once she hits that 1 year mark, we can start replacing nursing sessions with a snack and cup of cow's milk. But up until that one year mark, breast milk (or formula) needs to be their main source of nutrition.

Keep giving him the normal amount of formula and add 3 "meals" of solids per day. This could amount to 1 Tbsp or 1 jar of food, depending on his appetite and/or mood any given day. As he grows, his food intake will increase, so you really don't have to 'wean' him off formula at all. Once he's 12 months, you can replace the formula with whole milk and move away from bottles to cups.

I'd say you're doing just fine :o)

My son just turned 7 months and we have recently started him on three meals a day. He has cereal and a half a jar of fruit for breakfast. For lunch, he has half a jar of meat and half a jar of either a fruit or a veggie. And for dinner, he has a whole jar of meat and a half jar of veggie. Along with his meals, he is drinking between 24-28 ounces of formula per day.

We're first time parents, too, so we've just been experimenting with his schedule but this seems to be working for us.

We were doing about that same thing when our kids were that age. Our doctor warned us against giving too much solid food, since babies should get most of their nutrients from breast milk/ formula until age one. He recommended (at 9 month check up) one jar of baby food and cereal through one year (didn't specify the size jar). By the time he was one, he was eating more than that, but it was nice to know that you don't have to push a ton of solids. I will note that my son was 80% for height and weight, so that was not an issue. I also did not formula feed, so I don't know much about that!

With my first, I asked a question very similar to this at 8 months:) I had no idea how hard it would be to figure out what to feed a baby!

Hi my baby is 7 months also and I have her eating the same amount as you... The dr told me not to feed her less formula bc the water that's in it helps them digest the jar foods ... And he also said to try and dilute some juice and give her 4 ounces a day for just a little extra to help digest if that's any help for you goodluck:)

At 7 months old, my son had cereal and a 7 oz bottle in the morning, a half jar of fruits and veggies for lunch and dinner. He gained an average of a lb or 2 per month til he turned 1 yrs old. I think your son should be getting a little more to eat.
