My son did that and we got flannel (from JoAnne's) and used velcrow between teh bars to cover the edges. Worked great. I promise she'll out grow it. Good luck.
My 9 month old daughter has taken up the habit of chewing on her crib rails. They are to thick to use the protectors they sell at BabiesR Us. I know the finish and coating are non toxic, but she has gotten to the wood! I don't want to ruin the wood anymore than it is. Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?
Thank you all so much. I lowered her bed again so maybe it wouldn't be so easy to get to, although being pregnant it made it harder for me to get to her. I guess thats part of being a mom. I'm going to try a blanket or towel. I thought of that at first but wasn't really sure how to fasten it. I'll let you all know how it works.
Thanks again

We put up the Crib Shield system by Breathable Baby in my son's crib when he started getting his legs caught in the sides. There's a separate panel for each side of the crib that covers the tops with fabric and velcro and has mesh sides. Maybe that would work? Take a look: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2306739 Good luck!
Yes, my sister's 10 month old son did that a few weeks ago. Her gorgeous crib was absolutely ruined (looks like chewed corn on the cob!). She was so upset and at first thought it was defiance on his part (not wanting to take a nap). It turns out it was a double ear infection. He never showed any other signs of having an ear infection and she would never have guessed if another mom hadn't said something. She took him straight to the doctor and the dr actually laughed at her and said it was impossible. Then looked in his ears and they were so bad! I hope that helps.
Congrats on your next baby on the way. Mine are close in age like that too. They play so well together - it's great!

this can also be found all over the internet
try lemon juice. if that doesnt work, try cayenne pepper or anything else you know she hates on the rails.
When my baby did that, she pretty much stayed to one area. I put a dish towel around it and pinned it with safety pins. It's not very cute, but it worked. It seems like you can use a bigger towel and pin the ends if she's chewing all over. I don't know. I hope this might help.
They sell foam protectors that stick right on and can contour with the shape and size. I have seen them in the One Step Ahead catalog (they also have a website) and I have also them at Room 4 Baby in Gilbert on Gilbert & Baseline (Trader Joe's/Michael's plaza).
My niece did this too--does your daughter also eat paper??? If so, you might want to mention it to your pediatrician since it can be a symptom of a deficiency. I don't remember if it's iron or what, but that is what was wrong with my niece.
My daughter did the same thing at that age and I to had a crib that was to thick for the plastic piece that they carry for alot of cribs-all I can say is that I put a big heavy blanket over it and it helped alot -it wasnt the cure but it helped and she outgrew it in like 3 months -I also kept moniter on through the house and made sure she didnt stay awake in crib by herself -that helped to cause I would come in and catch her as soon as she started-good luck-and it does get easier-----
Mt mother-in-law made a fabric cover for my crib rail. It is really simple, just a long piece of cloth, that she stuffed just a little to cushion it and then VERY securely she sewed short straps along it so I could tie it down, if you are interested in the pattern, send me a message and I will get it from her.
Hey there...my now nine year old use to do that too. I would suggest coating the edeges with something foul tasting. A little soap or something would be safe but hopefully deter her eating habits! Otherwise, maybe you could wrap the rail edge with a fabric cover. I think this stems from just the good feeling against the gums. Maybe find her a hard chew toy. Good luck!
I would just put some towels or something around the wood.
I know that this might sound alittle gross but try bitters. The same stuff they use to get dogs to stop chewing! Good luck

is she hungry or thirsty?
maybe a snack or some water just before bed?
that might help.
if she's just teething - maybe a teething toy that's safe for her crib? hook on the side with a teething ring link?
don't worry about the wood - it's just wood.
i'd be more concerned about the paint. you should be ok if it's not from china.
my little boy did the same thing about then.
he's a morning person and i'm not.
if i had my husband put him in his playpen before he left for work, he'd play quietly till i could function.
usually about a half an hour.
he was safe and didn't eat his way out of his crib.
he had toys and books and was fine with that.
best of luck :)

sometimes when children crave non-nutritional substances they are low in iron. this can be critical for young ones because low iron can limit their development. Please have her iron levels checked by the pediatrician. I went through this with two of my kids, one of whom was always chewing up books!

I just want to say, my daughter just got over doing this. She has completely marked up one side of her crib. It looks terrible! She only did it when she wanted to get out. She would be quiet and I could hear the scratching on the bed rail. I would run in there to stop it, but it was always too late. She now has grown out of it, so at least you have that to hope for! I hope some of the posts help! I found this site to late!
She won't be happy, but maybe putting some of the bitter stuff on it that people use to stop thumb sucking? Something safe but bad tasting.
There is not anything you can do i have the same problem with my crib my daughter would chew the wood off when i would leave her in there longer than she wanted or did not want to be layed in there. i supose put something in there to take her mind off chewing on the crib like that music thing that straps on to the crib that plays lulabys and has lights its that rainforest product i think its from fisher price. or maybe if she is not hungry when you put her in there put a pacifier in her mouth that is what i had to do. some moms do not like pacifiers but it will save your crib. By the way congrats and good luck i got pregnant with my second 1 when my 1st was 3 months old hopefully 1 is laid back they are now 19 mon and 7 mon any questions just ask!
