My Son Is Eating His Crib!

I know this sounds wierd, but my 10-month old son is literally eating his crib. He started just chewing on the rails and leaving teeth marks when he started teething, which I've heard of...but now he has 6 teeth and today he took a huge bite out of the end and took off a pretty good chunk! My husband had to retrieve a chunk of wood out of his mouth that he was chewing on when he got him up from his nap. I'm afraid to leave him in there for fear that he will chew another chunk of wood off and choke on it! I thought his crib was supposed to be a "safe" place for him to be!?! Help! Has anyone else had this problem? How do I keep him from chewing on it?

What can I do next?

my daughter did the same thing... i tied a blanket on each end of the crib (over the head and footboard part) and it covered the spot that she was chewing..Not only did it cover it so she wouldnt chew it, but she also didnt "see" the spot anymore so pretty soon she forgot all about it lol

It's normal for them to bite and chew on everything when they are teething. But very dangerous when they get chunks of things in their mouth. Babies r us carries the plastic crib rail protectors that will keep him from getting any loose pieces in his mouth. He will still bite on it but it's heavy plastic that will endure.

Hi S.,

Although my daughter doens't sleep in her crib we put her in there occasionally to get things done in the house. She ate her crib too!! I bought something called Gummi Crib Rail, it's like a gummi substance that goes over the rail of the crib so they can't bite the wood. I had to buy this one because we ahve a convertable crib and it has an extra wide rail. If you have a regular crib they have sonmething called crib rail tee5thing protectors, they are a hard plastic and only fit on regular old fashiopned cribs. The Easy Teether Crib Rail Cover by: Leachco is also an option, it's just soft matieral. The first two can be purchased online or at babiesrus, the third is only avbailable online. I hope thisa helped.

This may sound cruel... but it worked with my son...
put a THIN layer of soap on it. It will not hurt him and it should deter him. Watch him though... some kids LIKE the taste of soap and I would only try it for a couple of days!

Get him out of the crib before he hurts himself. Put him in your bed with pillows around him for his nap. For night time, put him on a mat on the floor if you and your husband need to have the bed to yourselves.

You are right to be concerned about your son's wellbeing, and you will need an immediate solution to keep it from getting worse (for the crib AND for his little mouth. If he is chewing on the wood of his crib-rail than you have got to put him in another secure enclosure that does not come apart when chewed. Do you have a pack-n-play? If not, can you get one? The rails are made of a tough fabric that will not splinter when gnawed on. I've also hear of rail enclosures or caps or something like that for cribs, but I don't know enough about them. Maybe info online or from the other Moms that will respond. Good luck!

Well, he shouldn't really be able to bite pieces of wood off, so the crib must not be real wood, so the best would be to get a new, solid-wood crib; most good-quality cribs have plastic covers over the rails specifically to prevent the baby from chewing through the paint. Or you could get a travel cot. which is usually made of microfiber etc, so he wouldn't bite pieces off - that would definitely be a more economic solution.

I have this problem, too, with my toddler. She STILL chews her crib. It isn't just the rails, she can't chew thru the plastic on those. She chews the head and foot boards also. I don't think they make plastic for these. Any suggestions? I will not be putting her in a portable crib or a bed. She will only sleep in her crib.

And yes, it's solid wood.

HI S... MY DAUGHTER BEGAN DOING THIS AS WELL WHEN SHE BEGAN TEETHING. I NOTICED PAIN MISSING THEN PEICES OF WOOD... I PUT PLASITC CRIB GAURD RAILS UP AND SHE EVENTUALLY STOPPED. IF THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR U , THEY HAVE SOME LIQUID SUBSTANCE TO PUT SO IT TASTES NASTY AND THE BABY WON'T WANT TO BITE IT ANY LONGER. KIND OF LIKEA THUMB SUCKING MEDICINE.

You could by crib rail guards they are plastic & go over the edge. Hope this helps otherwise maybe just have him sleep in a pack-n-play since it's a bit early for a bed. Best of luck to you.
