Ear Wax

My son is 15 months old and has excessive ear wax. When ever we go for his regular checkups they have to use a machine to puch water through his ear to clean it out. I know I am not suppose to use Q-tips but I was wondering if anyone knew of a liquid solution sold somewhere that I can drop in his ears. Or if someone knew a home remedy that would work. I appreciate your help in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi Candace,

Go to a health store and ask for an ear candle. They can instruct you how to use it. It gently suctions any wax, debris, water, whatever is not supposed to be in there, out. I have used it on my children, my 88 year old father with dementia and myself. It does not hurt at all just a slight tickle and it works WONDERFULLY. IF his ears are as full as you say, 2 candles might be needed the first time. I know the water thru his ears is terribly uncomfortable. I also use a drop of Melaleuca oil in a teaspoon of olive oil heated slightly to loosen and help any type of bacteria or infection. It is also soothing. Don't just use any Tea tree oil (the ones sold in the health store are usually caustic but Melaleuca brand oil is NOT caustic). Let me know if you need some oil and we can talk further or get you some. My cell is ###-###-#### or email me at ____@____.com.

I hope this helps the little one feel more comfortable!

both of my kids have BAD ear wax problems. we have used the Debrox ear wax removal system we do it in the bath tub , and then squirt water in their ears and with a suringe. sometimes pouring hydrogen peroxide in also helps loosen it up.

please do not try the " ear candles" that you can get from the health food store , they do not work,They have been tested by scientists and what is supposedly ear wax and "impurtites" is actually just the melted wax from the candle.

My daughter has this same problem. We have never had an in-office procedure, but her pediatrician told me to take a medicine dropper and put hydrogen peroxide in her ears. Give the peroxide time to bubble around inside and then take a nasal/ear aspirator and suck the wax out. This helps but it is really hard for the kids to understand so expect some screaming and you may even need help holding him down.

my child had the same thing recently but her ear doctor said it was an infection. she gave her ear drops and it went right away. you could ask the ped to refer you to an ENT or you could try some over the counter ear drops and see if that helps.

My son had the same problem for a while he has since grown out of it. Hoever, my pediatrician told me to use mineral oil. Drop 4 to 5 drops in each ear before bed. He would wake up in the morning and the towel I layed in his bed had ear wax and other gunk on it. I used a q-tip in the morning and his ears would be nice and clean for a few days.

Good Luck

Believe it or not if you go to the drug store and ask the pharmacist for liquid colace ( I know it is a stool softner ) but it really works. I am a nurse and when my daughter was very young she had the same problem. Her pediatrician told me to go my pharmacist and have them prepare a bottle of liquid colace and put 1 drop in each ear daily for one week and that did the trick for us, whenever there was a problem. You should ask of course ask the pediatrician what she/he suggests but this worked for us. Hope this helps

Our ENT also recommended mineral oil. It wasn't enough to clear out "the jam", but once he took care of that, it worked well for "maintenance". 4-5 drops in the ear every night, and let it sit for a few minutes before he sits up.

Hi C., I am not aware of any liquid solution, but I recently found the Johnson and Johnson safety Qtips for children (in the pink package). The tip is enlarged so it can't go into the ear canal, but it does a really good job of cleaning the wax on the outside of the ear and at the very entry of the ear. I found them at walmart but have also seen at babiesrus. Hope this helps...

Try hydrogen peroxide, let it foam up and wipe with cotton balls. You may have to do it a few times. You just put a small amount and I don't know how well you will get him to sit still for this.

i know they say not to use qtips but i have used them on my son since birth. one make sure you hold his head with one hand or have husband do it. two hold qtip down at tip so if he jerks the worst that will poke is tip (1/2 inch) dont hold in middle or at other end. then do "what you see is what you get" dont go digging but if it is like my son you will get tons just within the 1/2 inch of tip. otherwise sorry i have no solution or liquid.

C.,

You can use Hydrogen Peroxide in his ears instead of Q-Tips. The problem will be getting your child to lay still long enough to let it do the job. Let it sit in his ear for about 15 seconds and then tilt his head over onto a warm towel. Repeat on the other side. It always helped my son, and I hope it helps yours!

C.,

What my husband and I do is lay the child on their side on the floor. Make sure you have a towel underneath them and pour a capful of peroxide in their ear. Let it sit for a few minutes. Let the bubbles do their thing. And soon you will start seeing stuff float to the top. It is a good thing to do also when you know you are getting sick.

Thanks,

q-tips are not recommended for kids ears due to the fact that it will impact the wax into the ear drum. I would suggest going to a natural foods store and checking out what they have. Keep in mind swiping the visual part of the ear does nothing for the source of the problem, the inner ear(which does need some wax for ear drum protection).
I must say in defense to ear candles, My husband and I have used them for years with wonderful results, and I would use them on my children in a heartbeat. After many days of camping, I have even found a small bug amongst the wax, and I can't imagine a bug would fly through smoke and implant itself in wax. I have read the "scientist" and dr's reports that the wax is from the candle, and I just don't buy it, you can replicate the tunnel of the ear through a teddy bear or vial, and chances are, these people are getting paid by companies that remove ear wax through liquid and perscribed drugs. Not intending to go conspiracy theory on you, but I believe you should keep an open mind, and as sad as it is, Dr's aren't always motivated by the well being of our children. Ear Candles have been safely used for 2500 years, and it is the most effective way to remove ear wax without pushing something, or pouring some unknown substance into the ear canal.
