I would talk to the pediatrician about allergies before trying anything else. Since it's summer where you are, he could be getting the sniffles from grass or tree pollen, something outdoors like that.
My son is not quite 15 months and has had 4 back to back cold/coughs in a row and now seems like he is getting another one. Here is why I am perplexed:
He doesn't go to day care (his grandma watches him) so he isn't around lots of other kids.
It is currently summertime here (we live in Australia but Mamapedia only lets you enter US states/cities)
My husband and I are generally healthy people
I know that it could possibly be teething but I am not convinced. I just read a post about a vitamin supplement for babies/toddlers and was wondering if that would help him to stay healthy? He already has probiotics once a day and eats the standard fare for toddlers. Is there anything else I can do to keep him healthy?
Thank you for all of your great responses! He didn't end up getting a cold but the first thing I did was to sterilize all his toys. He already does take probiotics once a day but you reminded me how important it is to continue that. And I have read great things about Shaklee vitamins but they don't seem to sell them in Australia. At least not that I could find. Next time we see our doctor I think I will for a vitamin that we can give DS with his meals and if he continues to get cold like symptoms I will ask for an allergy test. Such great suggestions, thank you!

Do you think there is any chance he has allergies? Both my kiddos have bad allergies and that can look like a cold in a little one.
Hi A.,
You can detox your house. Most "colds" are really reactions to synthetic chemicals or either the chemicals in the home have weakened an immune system so much that you aren't able to fight off the germs naturally. All the symptoms of a cold are the way the body protects itself.
Think about it. Chemicals can be inhaled, ingested and absorbed through the skin. We wash our clothes and sheets in chemicals and then wrap our bodies in them. The skin absorbs everything. That's why the medical community uses patches for medications these days.Chemicals outgas so we have them in our air. Little ones have smaller lungs and breath twice as many breaths as we do per minute so they inhale twice as much. Detoxing can be simple and it can also be inexpensive. If you want to take that route, just let me know. I can walk you through it.
Regards,
M.
PS My kids don't get sick anymore....
If it's summertime... it may not be colds, but allergies. Is there any history in either of your families of allergies? Allergies can look like a cold, but it's harder for them to get rid of the signs & keep "colds" away. With allergies, you can have a stuffy & runny nose (usually clear, but can turn to greenish yellow), couch, watery eyes, headace, and they can be cranky cause they just don't feel right. You might want to take him to see the doc & mention any history of allergies & all the colds he is getting. They should be able to offer you an allergy med for your son to take, but at that age the dose is figured out by weight - so I would talk to the doc about it.
I have 3 kids that are on Zyrek... all of them are 5 & under. Last year we fought a ton of colds... this year isn't as bad, just a few. Also, 2 of those kids have Asthma which we have had less issues with because we have had less issues with the allergies... which in it's self is a blessing.
Yes, my kids take a multivitamin, but I didn't start the over the counter gummy ones till they were over 2. Before that I did have a prescription for my youngest - was a liquid w/ a dropper. I do try to switch back & forth between a reg. multivitamin & the immune vitamin (one day they get one the next the other), but somedays I forget which they got yesterday. But I only give them one a day (not the 2 it says to), because they do eat a really balanced healthy diet. It's just incase they have a bad eating day.
Hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon - take care!!!
My son, who was 2 1/2 at the time, had four or five colds in a row in Oct. He would be sick for four or five days, then it would go away for a few days, and then it was back. One idea that we had was to wash ALL his toys. We actually put him in the tub with the toys and have his clean them. SInce it's summer, you could do it outside. It is actually a GREAT AND POTENTIALLY LONG activity. After that...he was healthy. Just had to clean all the germs off.
if your sons upper neck is jammed it can reduce the release of fluid in the sinuous and ears . have a pediatric chiropractor/ crainiosacraal/ or D.O. check him out. if he doesn't like pressure at the place where your head meets your neck of just behind his ears you'll know he is out. Good luck
my family has been having the same problem. We are starting to all take probiotics. Maybe do some reasearch on that and see if you think it would be helpful.
Try Ultimate Aloe Juice. It is all natural, safe for baby and will super charge his immune system. We can deliver to Austrailia so let me know if you want more info. I have all my kids on this product. It's strawberry kiwi so the kids love it. It tastes like a popscicle
Its very normal and there is no need to run to the drs. Just do your best to keep him comfortable - extra water, humidifier either with vick's vapor stuff or try the plug in vapor things, tylenol/motrin. Also, make sure to change the sheets and disinfect his room and toys often, especially after an illness.
The other possibility, since you say its summer time, would be allergies. I've recently started giving my 20 month old an over-the-counter allergy medicine (Zytrec) each night before bed because of allergy symptoms and its made a world of difference for him.
Huh. Well, all I can say is that my boys always seemed to be dripping from the nose from about a year on. Colds, allergies, whatever. If you have contact with other kids, it's gonna happen. If he seems happy and healthy otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. It's normal. They do "teethe" for a while. You can talk to your pediatrician, but I believe that it's at least through the late 2's into the 3's.
If you haven't had him checked for allergies, I would start there. If it is not allergies, I would ask your Ped for a complete exam with a blood screen and rule out some more serious condition, for constant cold symptoms can be a warning..
If all is well, and I pray it will be, then I would consider some vitamin supplements ( ask your Ped how much and what kind).
Also, You might discreetly observe Gramma's practices regarding germ control, particularly in a heated climate. Good luck.
Hello! Is there a chance your son is suffering from some sort of seasonal allergy as opposed to a cold? Runny nose, sneezing, maybe a tickle in the throat... Could come with eye irritation & maybe even some drainage in his hears. Then he wouldn't be "catching" anything. It's just in the air...
Good luck A.!
Try a tea of garlic and onions (sounds worse than it taste) and give him teaspoons of it for about a week, see if that helps build back his immunity and break up the cold virus.
I had the same problem with my son. He was finally diagnosed with allergies.
A.,
