Spray bleach or vinger on the trash can and the bags inside! It will mask the odor comeing from the bags that is causeing the dog to knock the cans over. I hope this helps.

Here recently there has been a dog getting into our trash can at night. I don't know if its our dog or another but I need a humane way to curb this. The can is standard issue by the waste company so we can't get a different one. It has a flip top lid and this dog just knocks it over and helps himself. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. C.
Bunjee cord didn't work. Don't have a garage. Going to try Vinegar then just work down the list. Thanks for the ideas. C.

Hey C., it's M.. Get a jar of jalapenos and pour the juice from it over your trash bags. Should stop the dog immediately!
C. - there's already some great suggestions but the first thing that came to my mind is to tie the can to something so it won't fall over. If the cans are like what I'm thinking of by your description, there's a handle that you "drive" it to the street with that goes horizontally across the back. Maybe you could use a bungee cord or some other strong string or twine to tie the can to a fence or something else that won't move. This way, you can still get into the can to put trash in but the dog won't be able to turn it over easily. Maybe it will give up after a few nights of not being able to turn it over and move on to someone else's house. Good luck girl!
C.,
If the bungee cord on top of the trash can is broken then they should replace it. Otherwise, you'll have to be sure to move it to a secure location every night (your garage for instance) or figure out a way to lash it shut.

Use bungee cords - strap from back handle to front. Easy to remove and reattach. If that doesnt work, toss in an angry skunk... not really, but there are products on the market (and some make-your-owns) that are suppose to repel animals. Just google dog repellent for some ideas. :]
Buy a box of mothballs at the Dollar General by the laundry detergent section of your store on the bottom shelf.. I looked at Lowes and Home Depot to no avail. Anyway, dump some in the bottom of your can, and if need be layer a few in the middle if the garbage is reasonably fuller that particular week. They won't go near it!!! And not to worry they won't ingest it neither :) Hope this works for you. Let us know. Good Luck.
pour amonia over the trash in the can.
We used bungee cords to hold the lid closed.
Keep in mind dogs will mark a can and if another comes along he will make it's marking.
The thing I would do is make sure and put of lot of red or black pepper where he is likely to sniff.
After a good sniffing believe me he will leave it alone.
MMMMMMMMM, I have been having trouble with amadillos digging my new egg plant and thanks for coming here as I am going to see if I can get rid of them in the same manner.
God Bless
squirt pine oil on outside of trash can and make sure that trash cans have a tight lid. pbh
Hi C.,
I know there are products on the market that deter dogs from digging and such and the spray might just work on a trash can as well. I'm not sure what the product's name is but if you go somewhere like PetSmart or PETCO and ask I'm sure they'll be able to help you.
Good luck.

Depending on what time your trash is picked up you could put it on the curb in the morning. I know they start early, but ours isn't picked up until almost noon, somtimes after. We keep ours in the garage and my husband puts it out before he leaves for work.
they have straps you can get to lock your trash holder but then you have to worry that the garbage men don't loose them maybe but in your garage if you have one and then on trash day put your trash out early in the morning it could also be raccoons good luck
Sounds like it'd be easier to get to the source and take care of the dog! If its yours-you know what to do. If it's not- aren't there dog catchers for that? Why can't people take care of their dogs? If it has to be picked up at a shelter and thay have to pay-maybe they will make sure their dog is contained better -if they care about them.
