My DH just called me at work to tell me that our German Shepherd Dog vomited and pooped in a few different areas on our living room carpet (which is a tan/off-white color, of course) and I'm not sure what the best way is to clean it up. With our cats, when they cough up a hairball and / or vomit, we just wait until it dries and vacuum it up.
But what is the best way to clean up dog vomit and diarrhea on a light colored carpet? Thanks for the suggestions!
Blot it up. Soak the carpet with water. Blot that up. Use Nature's Miracle on the spot....sold at Pet Stores. I use it on everything!
I don't have carpet due to allergies and the basic facts that cats/dogs will barf and have diarrhea and pee in the house when they're sick. Which leads me to my main point, please take your dog to the vet ASAP if this doesn't clear up within 24 hours. For my past Corgi, she was doing this and it turned out she had kidney disease. If they catch it soon enough, they can sometimes do something. Also, my Corgi was quite young - around 6 (she was a rescue, so this is just a guess based on general health - she may have been even younger since she was neglected for 3 years before we got her). So, even if your dog isn't older, it is still important to get feedback from the vet and I would insist on basic blood tests to look at liver and kidney function. If we had done it sooner, we might have been able to save her.
Scrape it up. Then blot with a clean paper towel.
Then run to the store (Pet Smart, Pet Land) and buy Nature's Miracle or Petzyme and soak the areas. Then wipe up with a clean paper towel.
I'm going to check out the stock price for Nature's Miracle.... I love that stuff and buy enough I should invest....
resolve and a scrub brush.. works better than any pet cleaner products.. trust me.. i have 3 dogs.. two of which can be very naughty w/ messes if you know what i mean
I just came across your request. Hope this helps for the future anyway.
Here are a few good ways to handle this that I know of:
1. Use an old tablespoon that you won't use for people use again. Scoop up the mess and put it in a plastic bag to toss away. Use a SpotBot with a manuf recommended enzyme cleaner which will do all the work for you from that point on. They are Great!
2. A carpet cleaner guy advised me to have a small wetvac on hand. Put the sucking end of the nozzel right down on the mess and vacuum it straight up. All of it. Then spray an enzymatic cleaner on it from Home Depot and use old white towels to blot, blot, blot until it doesn't blot up any more stain. (I can't imagine having this yuck in the vacuum hose that stays there but I didn't ask about that.)
3. The pet stores sell a product that supposedly turns vomit and diarhea into a solid so you can scoop it up as a solid. Worth a try I'd think but I keep forgetting to pick it up.
Spot Shot is the best carpet cleaner for pet stains. I unfortunately have a lot of experience in this area. You can find it almost anywhere it comes in a dark blue aerosol can with an orange top.
Spray vinegar and pour A LOT of baking soda on it. Let it dry completely (may even take a day or so). Then vacuum it up. It should take away any stain and odor. We use that for any spills and any accidents in the bed that go on to the pillow. It works wonders!!!
When we had dogs, we tried all the pet stuff on the shelves, and nothing works! It looked like it worked until about a week later when the stain appeared. That also leads to them going in that same place more often because of the odor that we may not smell, but they do. Plain white vinegar and baking soda will do the trick and are so much cheaper!
