Does Anyone Know of This Video or Have Suggestions?

My question is this: a coworker mentioned a video that she found in the library that she used with her son. She started at 16 months and he was fully potty trained by 2 years. I know that all kids are different, but it can't hurt, right. The problem is that the video was 18 years ago! She said that there were some really catchy songs about going potty, and it used the toilet in the video, not the baby potty. Other than that, she didn't remember much. Does anyone know of this video or have suggestions for others? Good books would be welcome too. My son has never watched TV (maybe with a babysitter), so something short may be good too.
Please don't tell me that it is too early to potty train my son. I have no desire to push him into something he is not ready for, but I like to be prepared for when he is, and it may take me awhile to find what I am looking for.

A book that worked for my son was one that we got at Costco. It's a large board book that has 3 different stories in it, one about getting a new sibling, going potty, and starting preschool. He had started going #2 on the potty at 18 months but for some reason it was hit and miss with #1 for almost a year after that! We got him this book because he was getting a new brother, but after we read the potty part he was potty trained! I guess he just had to decide to do it himself. Anyway, the book is good because it has pictures if real kids, not drawings, so I think that helped. It says "Three books in one" on the side of it and it's only about $8. On the back it says you can find it at www.priddybooks.com. Hope that helps!

Way to go with being willing to potty train early...and don't be afraid to start him at 14 months if you think he's ready! I trained my son beginning at 13 months and now, at 18 months, he tells me when he has to go potty and poop. He still has the occasional accident (especially since we just moved and his routine has kind of been thrown for a few days), but for the most part, he does great. You should check out my profile as I have responded to several people about this topic with LONG responses and would probably be better to just go to "see what I have been responding to" and read the responses there yourself! Anyway, good luck with the potty training...it was hard work this young, but ENTIRELY worth the effort!

PS Re: A Little About Me- "wish I could win the lottery so that I could spend all day with both of them"--Not sure your situation, but if you think you are forced to work due to debt, etc...check out the Dave Ramsey "Total Money Makeover"...my hubby and I are just starting it (and my friend just paid off all her debts and is working on her mortgage now to be paid of in only 5 years using this method) and we now have a 3 year plan for the credit card/auto debt- but will probably be paid of much shorter than that- and a 10 year plan for our new house (and yesterday, I went and paid off ALL our medical bill debt...yipee!!!)...his method is simple, but takes lots of sacrifice over a short period of time, but once that time is over, it is well worth the short effort you put in. You can find his book at your local library or purchase it!

We are attempting to become completely debt free so my hubby can stay home with us (or only work part time) and finish his pastoring degree, so he can do what he REALLY wants to do...be a pastor! We are excited about getting out of debt...so don't think it is out of your reach...you can do it WITHOUT winning the lottery (though that would be really cool too!!!)! Anyway, maybe check it out...or google "Dave Ramsey" and check out his website! If you have more questions regarding his method, feel free to send me a message!

I don't know the video, but we like the book "Toilet Training in a Day". I don't remember the author. We always just get it from the library. It's 90% successful with kids 20 months and older where both parents on board. It's really easy. Worked for both our boys around their birthday with no problem. GL!

Sound like I could have used that video! When you feel your son is ready for potty training, go for it! I'm sure you know the signs (interest in all things potty-related, several hours with dry diaper, etc.) My son seemed ready well before age 2, but I was afraid to push him, so I waited for more signs, and missed that window of cooperation! I finally bought 20 pair of underpants and got rid of diapers during the day at 2yrs9mos. I winged it--we used stars on the calander for a reward--different colors for different accomplishments (gold for pee, blue for poop, and red for one day, no accidents) After meeting goals, he got a treat--new book, trip to the zoo, etc. The first day and a half were brutal, but then he started to recognize "that feeling" and he made progress every day. It took us a month total. He had rare accidents after that, but nothing major. We've moved around a lot over the last year, and he seems to backslide a bit anytime we have a major change. The pediatrician says it's normal, and he's always back on track in a couple of days. I'm just telling you this because it may be something to watch for and not get upset over if it happens! Our son really enjoyed the movie, "Elmo's Potty Time." We all still sing the songs and use some of the language from that video. I would still try to find your "Potty Training in a Day" video, but if you need extra material, try Elmo.

In terms of elimination communication (EC) or infant potty training, you're actually starting a little late! ;)

I don't know about this video you mentioned but you might find some useful resources in this area as well. I do part-time EC with my son, who is now 16 months. I've been doing it since he was a month or so old... to at least keep him aware of the sensations. Contrary to what western wisdom tells us infants do, in fact, have control over those muscles at a very early age. (My DS2 actually went through the night DRY a number of times before he was even 6 months old and was signing 'potty' by then, too. You'll be amazed what they're capable of!)

Anyway, here are a couple sites to check out:
www.timl.com/ipt/ (scroll down, they give great instructions!)
www.tribalbaby.org/ECindex.html

Best of luck!

"Potty Time" may be the name if it doesn't have an "It's" in front. Try both - good luck! My son is 3 1/2 and is FINALLY getting trained - had to be his decision.

Get the book called "Potty Training in a Day". I got it with my first son and everybody made fun of me but it worked. My first son picked up on it in half a day and although I revised it for my second son (they all have different motivations) he potty trained in 1 day. We had no accidents, and I mean none, and it was a painless process. As far as timing, the first was at 2 years 1 month and the second one was at 2 years 6 months. You will know when your son is ready.

I believe the video is called "It's Potty Time!" I used it with my daughter, along with "Once Upon a Potty" and they were an absolute hit. Both were available at the library. I would put the potty in front of the TV and the rule was every 20 mins she could sit down on the potty and watch 5 mins of the video. We'd repeat until we had a happy coincidence, and then wait an hour or so before starting again. Very pleasant training experience. To ease your son into it, you could let him sit on the potty with his clothes on first, then ease him into doing it with a bare bottom. Good luck!
