So this has been a fun week for us with doctors. Our entire family has been sick with sore throats, coughs, headaches, congestion... So Monday we took our 3 kids to the doctor because they were not getting better. They did a strep throat test on our oldest (5 yrs old) and it came back positive so they gave us an antibiotic for all of them to clear it out and told my husband and I to see the doctor as well or we will just keep passing strep around. So we went to the doctor and I was diagnosed with bronchitis (I have been the sickest) and my husband was told that his is just allergies. Well the meds they gave my husband to help with his "allergies" have not worked he is getting sicker (they did a strep test on him that came back neg). Tuesday afternoon our 5 yr old broke out in hives which we thought might be due to the antibiotics so we took her back to the doc and they switched her antibiotics and gave her some allergy meds to help with the itching. Then this morning (wed) our 2 yr old has broken out in hives as well. I am tired of going to the doctors office since in the past 2 days we have spent about 9 hours at doc offices and waiting for prescriptions. I am mostly wanting to vent because of frustration. Also I am tired of doctors and I think that my husband doc misdiagnosed him since he is getting more miserable. Has anyone else had one of those weeks were you just want to curl up in a ball and ignore everything?

What can I do next?

Change doctors-no doctor should give every child in the family an antibiotic just because one child tested positive-sounds also like the hives may be a reaction to the antibiotic-husbands get sicker because that's "what they do"-all the best! do you have a dog? They can be carriers , too!

Ugh. This sounds like no fun at all. Sorry you are having one of those weeks.

I have been through this before and finally decided to find a family doctor who could see all of us. We've had some excellent ones over the years. For illnesses like colds, flu, pinkeye... it's easier for everyone to go in to the doctor together when we are all sick. Or, if one person is sick and others come down with it, the doctor can prescribe the pinkeye med for example over the phone for each individual as we catch it. My family also has alot of allergies, so it helps with medical history if the doctor knows what runs in the family. Anyway, after years of dealing with ob's, internists and pediatricians, having one dr. to oversee our general health has saved me alot of time and trouble.

Good luck, hope you are all well soon.

Your husband needs another strep test -- if he was given the "quick test" for strep, he needs the test that is sent away to a lab instead. I have had strep tests come up negative on me and on my child, only to have a second test come back positive a day or two later. Please get your husband to another doctor if this one is not helping. If this is not strep, he needs to sit in the doctor's office and say, "I'm staying until you decide what you DO need to test me for." He should not have to suffer.

I agree with Robin that your dr. is irresponsible to give antibiotics to kids who had NO test for strep done on them. They should not be having hives and that may indicate they have an allergy to the meds-- and such allergies can be very dangerous.

Of course we all have! But, instead of taking the 2 year old in, just call the doc's office and tell them what happened. Allergies to antibiotics tend to run in families, especially siblings. Save yourself a trip!

Make your husband go back to the doc, or a different doc, urgent care, etc and get another opinion. He might not have had strep at the time, but it sounds like he probably does now.

I feel for you mama! Good resting and recovery to you!
